Here's how you can apply for a Chapman's Licence:
- You will need to complete an application form. A link to download the form is provided under 'Documents to Use' Section. Complete the form in BLOCK CAPITALS in a dark ink or in typescript. In case you need more space to complete any section of the form, you may use a separate sheet of paper putting the appropriate section number against your writing or typing.
- Attach a cheque payable to ISLE OF MAN GOVERNMENT (amount - £60.00).
- You will also need to include in your application a copy of your current public liability insurance certificate. And a copy of any advertisement likely to be published in connection with the proposed venture.
- Send the completed form, cheque to this address:

A person who seek to buy personal and household goods such as precious metals, antique furniture, crockery and jewellery are called chapmen. They can set up in a hotel or they often go door to door.
The Office of Fair Trading is responsible for licensing such persons to protect the public. Making sure that only those who are fit and proper will come knocking on your door.
Required InformationEdit
- Name of the applicant (a separate application must be completed for each person who intends to go from house to house)
- Applicant's date and place of birth and current address
- If employed by a body corporate, list names, date and place of birth and current address of the Company Secretary and Directors and the Registered Office address
- If the applicant is a body corporate: Full address(es) of the applicant's place(s) of business outside the Isle of Man:
- How long have you operated from the address(es)
- Describe the type of business carried on from the address(es) provided, i.e. import, wholesale, retail etc.
- If the applicant have changed their names by deed poll, marriage or other means or have used other names, give full details in the order - title, full previous name, full current name:
- Give details of any Isle of Man Chapmen's Licence previously or presently held by any person named on this form
- Give details if any person mentioned on this form has ever has a Chapmen's Licence refused, cancelled or withdrawn
- Name under which the business is to be carried on in the Isle of Man
- Full address(es) of the applicant's intended place(s) of business in the Isle of Man if using fixed premises
- Place at which authorised representative will be temporarily resident in Isle of Man during licensed period
- Full details of the type of goods to be purchased
- Full names and addresses of any other person(s) not already named on this form who will be employed by the applicant on the Island
Need for the DocumentEdit
Under section 1 of the Chapmen's Act 1971, operating as a chapman without a licence is a criminal offence.
The licence is in the form of an A4 laminated licence with the Government crest. The licence will be signed by a senior officer of the Office of Fair Trading.
You may can present your licence to ease peoples doubts. This will make your transaction much easier.
