Wyoming - How to Obtain a Commercial Driving License

ProcedureEdit

Appear in person at your local driver exam station to apply for a Commercial Driving License.
Complete the Application Form (either online or through a TSA agent by phone).
Take your confirmation number with you to one of the TSA fingerprinting sites listed on its Web site. To be fingerprinted, you must present one "primary" and one "secondary" form of identification to the TSA agent.
Record your Social Security number on the application form. Your Social Security number will not be displayed on the face of your driver license or ID card, but is required as part of the identity verification process.
Submit your approval letter from TSA to your local driver exam office to apply for the CDL license with the hazardous materials endorsement. You must pass all required test(s) and Driver Services and must have received clearance from TSA prior to issuing the license.

EligibilityEdit

You must be at least 18 years of age to apply.
You must have a valid Wyoming driver's license and provide a Social Security number or a legal document with the number on it.
You must be a U.S. citizen; having been born in the United States, or born abroad of U.S. parents.

Your status with the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services must be "lawful permanent resident" or "conditional resident."
You must successfully pass Commercial Driver License Information System (CDLIS) and National Driver Record (NDR) checks.
You must have a current Department of Transportation Medical Examination Report, which is available online, proving fitness to drive.Wyoming does not actually require this physical, and many intrastate trucking jobs also do not necessitate it, but if you intend to drive interstate and make yourself more viable for employment it is necessary.

InstructionsEdit

You must be at least 18 years of age to apply. However, until one reaches the age of 21, the license will be restricted to intrastate driving only, and it will prohibit the transport of hazardous materials.
You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship. The state is specific about this, requiring one of the following documents:
- A certified birth certificate
- A valid U.S. passport
- A consular report of birth abroado
- A certificate of citizenship
- A certificate of naturalization
Every applicant must take and pass (80% or higher) a written general knowledge exam and an on-road skills test.
The skills test is comprised of three sections: pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle handling, and on-road review.
In order to take a skills test at an exam office you must provide your own vehicle in the class you are testing in, and pay a $40 fee.
A CDL is valid for four years and the fee to have one is $25. The fee for a permit is $20 and it can be renewed once in a two-year span.
The Act established three separate classes of commercial driver's licenses. Every state issues licenses in these categories:
- Class A: Any combination of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GWVR) of 26,001 or more pounds, provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- Class B: Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR.
- Class C: Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that does not meet the definition of Class A or Class B, but is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or is placarded for hazardous materials.
Endorsement: To be licensed for certain types of commercial vehicles, extra testing is required. If you pass, you will receive an endorsement on your CDL. These are the five endorsements that you can apply for. Each requires between one and five knowledge (written) tests, and two require driving (skills) tests.
