Apply Online

  1. To apply for EI sickness benefit, the applicant will need to submit the application form online, this must be done as soon as possible, find further information under the “Instructions” section of this page.
  2. Click on the following link to the application form Link.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and click on “Start applying”.
  4. Answer the questions when prompted and click on “Continue”.
  5. Under “What type of benefit would you like to claim?”, click on the “Benefits for employees” option and click on “Continue”.
  6. Under the next question click on “No”, and click on “Continue”.
  7. Under “What type of benefit are you applying for?”, click on “Fishing benefit”, click on “Continue”.
  8. The applicant will be directed to the application page, enter all the relevant details and click on “Continue”.
  9. The applicant will need to enter the details of employers as well as their bank information, once all details have been entered, click on “Submit”.
  10. Once the application and the document have been submitted, the applicant will receive a benefit statement and four-digit code by email.
  11. The applicant will need this code and their Social Insurance Number to track their application.
  12. The applicant can track their applicant from the Service Canada Centre or MSCA account. The applicant shall start receiving their payments within 28 days from the submission of the application.


Creating a My Service Canada Account (MSCA)

  1. The applicant will have to register for a My Service Canada Account (MSCA). If the applicant has an account login. If the applicant does not have an account, follow these steps:
    • To create an account, click on the following Link.
    • Scroll to the bottom and under the “New User” option, click on the option the applicant would like to register using.
    • Click on “Start now”.
    • The applicant will need to enter all the relevant details such as username, password, bank details and so on and the account will be created.
    • Once the account has been created, the applicant can log in to apply for EI Fishing Benefits.

  • If the applicant’s SIN starts with a ‘9’ they will need to submit the following documents:
    • Proof of immigration status
    • Proof of work permit
    • All records of employment in paper format (This can be submitted at the Service Canada Centre or mailed, find mailing address under “Office Locations and Contacts”)

EligibilityEdit

  • The applicant is a self-employed fisher engaging in fishing.
  • The applicant may be eligible if they are unemployed in fishing.
  • The applicant’s eligibility also depends on how much they earned during their qualifying period. Find information on the qualifying period here: Link

  • The applicant does not need to pay any fees to obtain EI fishing benefits.



ValidityEdit

  • The applicant cannot work full-time and earn fishing benefits.

Processing TimeEdit

  • The applicant shall start receiving benefits within 28 days from the submission of the application.
  • There is a one week waiting period before the applicant starts receiving money, this is the deductible for the employment insurance.

  • The applicant must apply for fishing benefits as soon as possible, the applicant cannot apply any later than four weeks after their last day of work, the end of their fishing trip or the date the applicant sold their catches to the buyer.
