Procedure

Apply In-Person

1. Following are procedures on how you can renew your New Brunswick Medicare Card in person. You are required to appear physically at your local Service New Brunswick office (exceptions may apply) and submit an application for renewal if your Medicare Card has already expired. If your card was terminated within 24hours you will also need to apply for the procedure in person. Note: If your Medicare card has expired or was terminated more than 2 years ago, you will need to re-apply to N.B. Medicare. Instead of the Renewal Form you will need to complete an Application for Registration form.
2. A link to download and print the Application for Renewal Form is provided under 'Documents to Use' section. You can fill it up ahead of your visit to your local Service New Brunswick office. In case you have moved to a new address, you will need to inform Medicare regarding your new address. You can also fill up the same form and submit it personally.
3. Make sure that you fill up the form correctly. Please remember that all household members affected by the move must be indicated on the form. Failure to notify New Brunswick Medicare of your address change may result in termination of your Medicare coverage.
4. Submit the completed form and present proof of your identity and residency. To know which documents you can present please see list below. You are also required to provide a copy of your extended permit(s) or front and back of your permanent resident card(s) for each member of your household if your card has expired or coverage was terminated due to an expired immigration document.
5. You will be notified by Medicare when your card will be available.

Required Documents

Notes:

1. This is not a comprehensive list.
2. The same document may not be used to satisfy more than one requirement.
3. When you apply do not send original documents as Medicare cannot guarantee their return.

For Canadians:

• Birth Certificate
• Citizenship Card
• Passport
• Indian Status Card
• Baptismal certificate (if place of birth is identified)

Non-Canadians - mandatory:

• Canadian Immigration Identification Records and Entry Stamp on their Passport
• Proof of enrollment from an approved learning institution

Documents that may be accepted as proof of identity:

• Birth Certificate
• Valid New Brunswick Driver’s License
• Valid Passport (Canadian or foreign)
• Baptismal Certificate (if place and date of birth indicated)
• Valid Permanent Resident Card (front & back) or Record of Landing Document example: (Form # IMM 1000)
• Active Temporary Resident Permit issued by Citizenship and
• Immigration Canada
• Certificate of Canadian Citizenship
• Canadian Indian Status Card (front & back)
• Legal Name Change Document
• Student or Employee ID Card
• Previous Provincial Health Card

Documents that may be accepted as proof of residency

• Mortgage Document
• Rental or Lease Agreement (must be signed by landlord & tenant)
• Utility Bill - not older than 2 months (phone, energy, cable/satellite, water/sewer)
• Employment Confirmation - current (pay stub or letter from employer on company letterhead)
• Insurance Policy (home, tenant, auto)
• Valid NB Motor Vehicle Registration
• Valid NB Driver's License
• Child Tax Benefit Statement
• Property Tax Bill (current year)

If your card has expired or coverage was terminated due to an expired immigration document:

• A copy of your extended permit(s) or front and back of your permanent resident card(s) for each member of your household.

Eligibility

You may be eligible for a New Brunswick Medicare coverage if you are:

• a Canadian citizen or be legally entitled to remain in Canada and a resident who makes his/her permanent and principle home in New Brunswick; or
• an international student who meets the eligibility criteria.

The following individuals are NOT eligible for coverage:

• regular members of the Canadian Armed Forces, (however members of their families are eligible);
• tourists and visitors to the province;
• transients;
• students from another province; and
• inmates of federal penitentiaries.

Notes:

• A “resident” means a person lawfully entitled to be or to remain in Canada. A person who makes his home and is ordinarily present in New Brunswick, but does not include a tourist, transient or visitor to the Province; as legislated under New Brunswick's Medical Services Payment Act.
• Maintaining a dwelling, owning property in the province of New Brunswick, or paying New Brunswick property or income tax does not mean you are eligible to avail insured services under New Brunswick Medicare.

Fees

Explain the fees structure which is required for obtaining the certificate/document.

Validity

• Cards may be renewed for five years.

• Your card is valid until the last day of the month indicated. For example, a card showing the date "03/2020" is valid until March 31, 2020.

• Provided you are eligible for coverage and have kept Medicare informed of your current address and/or residency information, you may receive your card approximately 1 month before this date. Destroy your old card and use the updated card effective immediately.
