Apply In-Person:
- To apply for a driver’s license in British Columbia, the applicant will need to first get a Learner’s license (L).
- Study for the test, find a study guide under the “Documents
- to use” section of this page.
- Visit the nearest ICBC driving license office.
- The applicant can find the nearest ICBC office here as well as book an appointment online office
- The applicant will have to pay a fee.
- The agent will check to see if you have good vision.
- Once the applicant passes these tests, a learner’s license will be issued.
- The applicant will receive a temporary license which they can use until the license card arrives by mail.
- Once the applicant receives the license card, they will have to destroy the temporary license.
- The applicant can find additional information about what the test is like under the “External links” section of this page.
- The applicant needs to drive continuously for at least 12 months before they are eligible to take the test for the next level, the applicant is eligible for an N (Novice) license.
- To get a novice license the applicant will need to pass a class 7 road test.
- Visit the nearest ICBC office to take the test.

- The applicant will have to pay a fee.
- The agent will check to see if you have good vision.
- Once the applicant passes these tests, a class 7 license will be issued.
- The applicant will receive a temporary license which they can use until the license card arrives by mail.
- Once the applicant receives the license card, they will have to destroy the temporary license.

- After a period of two years and without any suspensions, the applicant can apply for a Graduated driver’s license (Class 5 road test), to apply, follow these steps:
- You will need to take a knowledge test, book an appointment and take the test at the ICBC office.
- The applicant can book a test here test booking
- The applicant will have to give a driver’s test.
- Once the applicant passes these tests, they can buy the license card.
- The applicant will be given a temporary license card until the card arrives through mail.
- The applicant is now fully qualified to drive.

EligibilityEdit
For a Learners license, the applicant must be:
- 14 years of age
For a Novice license:
- The applicant has to be at least 16 years of age.
- Written consent from parents if the applicant is under 18 years of age.
- The applicant must have a learner’s license with one year of experience in driving.
- The applicant must be a Canadian citizen/valid work or student visa/have an approved refugee claim.
- The applicant must be a resident of Alberta.
For a graduated driver’s license (GDL)
- The applicant must have a novice license.
- The applicant must have had this GDL for a period of two years without any suspensions.
- The applicant must be 18 years of age.
FeesEdit
The applicant will have to pay a fee which will be told at the office.
ValidityEdit
- The learner’s license is valid for 2 years.
- The license is valid for up to 5 years.
