Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. Application form for Permanent Resident Permit in Ghana is available in the Ghana Immigration Service Centre (GIS) contact link
2. An applicant has to approach the immigration service centre and applicants can get their application form for permanent resident permit.
3. Applicant must provide necessary information in the application form.
4. Make sure that his/her have all the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
5. Please refer to the fees details in the “Fees” section of this page.
6. One should proceed to pay the applicable application fees for the application and attach the proof of payment receipt to the application before submission.
7. Applicant should attach photocopies of documents (whichever is necessary) along with the applicant from while submitting it at the office.
8. If all above mentioned procedures were followed properly by the applicant, then the processing time for this procedure takes 2-4 weeks.
9. After payment, proceed to submit the application together with the required documents to the immigration officer in the GIS offices.
10. The immigration officer will forward the application to the assessment committee for further verification.

Eligibility

• Applicant Has resided in Ghana for more than 10 years and can prove that they have made a substantial contribution to the Ghanaian economy; or
• Applicant Is married to a citizen of Ghana for a minimum of five years and that foreign national:
• Applicant has resided in Ghana throughout the period of twelve months immediately preceding the date of the application.
• Applicant has immediately processing the period of the twelve months, resided in Ghana for an aggregate period of not less than two years.
• Applicant has not been convicted of any offence and sentenced to a period of imprisonment of twelve months or more.
• intends to reside permanently in Ghana upon the grant of the status; and
• Applicant is in possession of a valid residence permit on the date of the application.

Fees

• Indefinite residence permit (spouse of Ghanaians)
• GHS 1500 for Ghanaians with foreign passport
• GHS 1500 for ECOWAS members
• GHS 1500 for other Nationals
• Indefinite residence permit
• GHS 3000 for ECOWAS members
• GHS 4000 for Other Nationals

Validity

• Permanent Resident permit certificate valid forever.

• For foreigners who are able to secure a job in Ghana, the next step is to apply for both a work permit and a residence permit. Applications for resident permits must go through the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), and most employers should be able to assist with this process.

Need for the Document

• Permanent Residence may be granted to a foreign national to remain in Ghana for an indefinite period. Indefinite Residence also allows a person to enter and leave Ghana without limitation and to engage in work either as a self-employed or an employee without the need to obtain a work permit.

• Permanent resident application forms are obtainable free of charge at the Ghanaian Immigration Services (GIS) office. The form requires three classes of information; Company, Employee and Employment contract details.
• Relevant and accurate information must be provided in all sections to enable the GIS to effectively assess and the application on its own merits and take appropriate decision.
• The application forms should be signed by an authorized representative of the employer.
