Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. The Grave Space Permit is issued by the authorities in the Ghana Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Office Contact link
2. All burials in the Accra Metropolis must first pass through this department, after obtaining burial permit from births and death departments, whether at a public, private or a family cemetery.
3. To obtain Grave space, the applicant will need the medical cause of death from an approved health institution.
4. The applicant must obtain the Grave Space Permit application form from the AMA office.
5. The application form must be filled with the necessary details.
6. The filled application form must be submitted to the authorities in the AMA Office.
7. Payment of appropriate fees should be made and that can be found under the "Fees" section of this page.
8. The prescribed fee must be paid by the applicant, and the receipt of payment must be attached with the application form.
9. Submit the completed forms along with the supporting documents at the respective office for verification and processing.
10. This application will be processed and information will be verified by the AMA office.
11. If the verification is successful, the notification will be sent to the applicant.
12. After getting the notification from the concerned authorities, the applicant can visit the office to collect their document.
13. Generally, the processing time for this procedure is 2 weeks.

• Original Medical Certificate of Death
• The Registration of Death form to a records area of a hospital to Burial / Disposition Permit
• Proof of residency (for example electoral roll papers or Council Tax bills) when the applicant book the burial.
• A copy of the National Identity Card of the deceased or any other document certifying his identity ( birth certificate)
• Copy of the passport , citizen card, driving license(if applicant) or National Id of next of kin making application.

Eligibility

• Ghanaian citizen and non-Ghanaian citizens are eligible.
• Next of Kin of the deceased are eligible to apply for this application.
• Applicants must provide their proof of residency (for example electoral roll papers or Council Tax bills) when they book the burial.

Fees

• The cost of a burial plot depends on several factors. The kind of space, type of cemetery, and where the applicant live all play a role in how much the applicant will pay. On average, burial plots for caskets range from $525 to $5,000 and $350 to $2,500 for cremated remains in urns.

Validity

• Certificate of grave space permit validity is for 10 years.

Need for the Document

• Grave space means a space of ground in a cemetery intended to be used for the interment in the ground of the remains of a deceased person.

Information which might help

• The person named on a Deed as owner of Exclusive Right of Burial in a grave also has the right to have a memorial erected on that grave. Responsibility for any memorial erected on a grave lies with the person named on the deed pertaining to it.
• Although planning permission is not required for a limited number of burials, some built memorials would attract the attention of the planning authority. This need not be a concern if the applicants just intend to plant a tree.
