Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To Obtain Import Permit for Dogs and Cats, the applicant must go to the Biosecurity of Authority office in Fiji. Contact Link
2. The importer/shipper (applicant) can obtain the application form from the authorities in the Biosecurity office.
3. Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
4. The application form should be filled with necessary details, and along with the required documents, it should be submitted to the Biosecurity officer.
5. If the animals are kept in Transit before reaching the destination country, then the application form for Live Animals in Transit must also be attached. Application Form
6. The prescribed fee payment must be made and the receipt must be attached along with the application form.
7. After submitting the application, the Biosecurity officer will inspect the animals, and then will verify the details given in the application form.
8. After complete verification, the import permit for Dogs and Cats will be issued to the applicant.

10. The processing time will be intimated to the applicant while applying.
    

NOTE:

• It should be noted that Dogs and Cats must be imported to Fiji only from New Zealand, Australia excluding Northern territory, and the U.K.
• Dogs and Cats from the U.K may be transported by air via Los Angeles or Honolulu, but the transit time should not exceed more than 6 hours.
• Otherwise, the dogs and cats must be transported by sea, using the route approved by the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji.

Required Documents

• Dully filled Application Form.
• A statutory declaration form with ear tag number.
• Certificate from Government Veterinary Officer of the country of origin. The certification must be made on:
• Each animal has been domiciled in the country from where it is shipped for a period of 6 months immediately preceding shipment. Also, the dogs, puppies, kittens, and cats must be free from diseases during these 6 months.
• That he/she examined each of such animals within 7 days of shipment and has found it to be free from clinical disease and ectoparasites.
• Each dog has been vaccinated against canine distemper and infectious canine hepatitis within 6 months immediately preceding shipment.
• Each dog has been treated for Echinococous Granulosus by oral administration of either bunamidine or praziquantel or arecoline hydrobromide or other drugs approved by BAF within 4 weeks immediately preceding the date of shipment.
• Each cat and dog should be treated with a recognized insecticide within 48 hours immediately preceding the date of shipment.
• Each dog must be treated by injection of streptomycin at the rate of 10 mg per kg body weight, or such other antibiotics on each day 3 days as prescribed by the BAF immediately preceding shipment
• Each dog has been vaccinated against canine parvovirus disease, within 3 months preceding the shipment.
• The shipper should also attach the declaration sheet with kind, number, sex of every animals.
• If the animals are kept in Transit before reaching the destination country, then Application form for Live Animals in Transit is required. Application Form
• Fee Receipt.
• Other documents requested by the biosecurity officer while inspecting. (If applicable)

Eligibility

The shipper/owner of the live animals must apply for the import permit before entering into Fiji.

Fees

• Inspection of live animals on transit during working hours - per animal - $44.85
• Inspection of live animals on transit after working hours - per animal - $71.76
• Permit of importation of live animals (within 6 months of issue) single - per permit - $302.63
• Permit for the multiple importation of animal/animal products (within 6 months of issue) - $482.12
  

Validity

The validity duration will be mentioned in the import permit issued to the applicant.

Instructions

• Dogs and Cats travelling by air should be transported in containers according to the International Air Transport Association Live Animals Regulations act.
• Dogs and Cats from the U.K should be nose-proof, tongue proof, and the doors must be sealed in 2 places prior to departure.

Need for the Document

Without the import permit, none of the live animals can be brought into Fiji.
