ProcedureEdit

Apply In-Person:

  1. To register a birth the applicant has to approach Central Statistics Agency of Ethiopia location link or the application should also approach ministry of Health contact link
  2. An application form was provided to the applicant by the authorized officer.
  3. Applicant has to fill-in all the necessary details in the application form.
  4. Applicant must make sure to carry documents that are listed under “Required Documents” section of this page (Both photocopies and originals).
  5. For a child born in hospital:
  6. The parent(s) or designated guardian should obtain a birth notification card.
  7. The notification card should be presented to the district registrar of births and deaths, and this should be accompanied by the other information required.
  8. For a child born at home, birth registration should be sought from the local Sub-Chiefs Office, who assists with the necessary documentation.
  9. Individuals seeking late registration of birth should provide as many identity documents as they have to show that indeed they are Ethiopian Citizens. This information should be given to the district registrar of births and deaths.

  • If the child is born in hospital, the parent(s) or the designated guardian should obtain a birth notification card that acknowledges the birth. The notification card is presented to the district registrar of births and deaths for the birth certificate to be processed.
  • If the child is born at home, then registration can be done at the Sub-Chiefs office.
  • Individuals older than 6 months can also obtain birth certificates but submitting notification cards, baptismal certificate, school leaving certificate, identity card or passport. As many of these documents are needed to validate their date of birth.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • For children born in Ethiopia, the process of obtaining a birth certificate should start immediately after birth or within six months. Usually, the process is conducted by the child’s parents or guardians. Registration should be done even if the child dies at birth. However, individuals who failed to obtain the certificate at birth can still get it by following a special procedure.
