Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To Obtain a Police Clearance Certificate, the applicant has to approach the Federal Police Ethiopia link
2. The applicant has to visit the office with the request letter.
3. An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer.
4. The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
5. Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
6. The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
7. Submit all the documents with the completed form to the concerned officer.
8. The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority.
9. After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
10. An acknowledgment receipt will be provided. Please save it for future reference.
11. Once the process gets completed, the applicant gets a call from the office regarding the application.
12. The applicant has to visit the office to get the clearance certificate.
13. This entire process can be completed within 15 - 20 days or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.

Eligibility

• Applicant with a valid passport and a valid address proof.
• Age: 16 years and above. In case of minors, the application must be submitted by the parent exercising parental authority, if the minor has not turned 16 years.
• The current address of the applicant must be same as in the passport and other supporting documents.
• Applicants who are in need of residential status, employment or long term visa or for immigration to a foreign nation.

Instructions

Local Request

• You should apply in person with two passport-size photographs, a copy of your passport, a copy of your national identity card (for nationals only) and a letter from the respective Immigration Visa Office requesting the certificate, at Ethiopian Federal Police Commission Forensic Investigation Department
  

Non-Resident Requests

• You should apply at Ethiopian Federal Police Commission Forensic Investigation Department, including with the request an original set of fingerprints taken by the police authority of your country of residence, copies of the pages of your passport, the applicable fees, two passport-size photographs and a letter from the Canadian Immigration Visa Office requesting the certificate.
• You may also ask a representative to submit the request in person on your behalf by presenting proof of legal representation and the documents listed above.

Need for the Document

• A police certificate is an official document issued by police or government agency of a country to enumerate any criminal records that the applicant may or may not have. Criminal records may include arrest, conviction, and possibly criminal proceedings.
• It is the applicant’s responsibility to contact the relevant authorities to obtain the necessary police certificates or clearances. Each country’s procedures are different. Applicants may have to apply to more than one level of government or more than one agency - municipal, provincial, state, federal and the police, courts or similar governmental agencies for the police certificate. If a police certificate cannot be obtained from any of the countries on the list, provide a written explanation why and an original letter from the police authority confirming that it will not issue a certificate.

Other uses of the Document/Certificate

In many immigration cases, you may be requested by the relevant Government to present a Police Clearance Certificate from another country where you have resided for some time. If you are going through the immigration process, you will definitely be asked for such a certificate.

A police certificate must also be obtained from the police authorities of any place where the applicant has been arrested for any reason, regardless of how long he or she lived there. Police certificates must cover the entire period of the applicant's residence in any area. A certificate issued by the police authorities where you now reside must be of the recent date when presented to the consular officer.
