Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. Application form for obtaining a road worthiness certificate is available in the Ethiopian Road Transport Authority contact link
2. Applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form.
3. Applicant must make sure to carry documents that are listed under “Required Documents” section of this page (Both photocopies and originals).
4. Applicant has to attach photocopies of documents (whichever is necessary) along with the application form.
5. Fee must be paid as per the request of the authority.
6. If all the procedures mentioned above are followed properly, applicant can get their certificate within a day.

Need for the Document

• This is a document certifying that a vehicle is road-worthy and can be driven on the Ethiopian road for a stated period of time.
• This document is mandatory for all commercial vehicles and its validity is for a period of 6 months. For private vehicles, however, that are older than 5 years, the road-worthiness certificate is to be obtained once a year. The road-worthiness certification process has been adopted in most of the regions in Ethiopia.
• You must have your motor vehicle tested for road worthiness before you register it in your name. If your motor vehicle is used for public transport or is a heavy-load vehicle (excluding buses), you must take it to be tested for road worthiness every year before you renew the motor vehicle license. A bus must be tested for road worthiness every six months.
