Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To obtain a Firearm license the Applicant should approach Ethiopian Federal Police Commission contact link
2. The police officer provides an application form that requires your personal information and reason for applying license.
3. Along with the application form a medical report should be submitted that confirms the applicant’s health is normal.
4. A health report on applicant’s chest is also submitted, that is to protect applicant from sharp retraction when gun is fired.
5. The applicant must pass the background test with clear records.
6. The applicant should provide a serial number of the weapon to the police officer.
7. Upon the successful appraisal of the application the license is issued in a booklet form bearing applicants photograph and stamp of State Police Headquarters.
8. State agencies are required on demand, to maintain records of the storage and movement of all firearms and ammunition under their control.

Eligibility

Applicant must be 35 years and above with:

• Clean criminal record
• Doctors certificate that certifies for physical and mental fitness.
  

Fees

The fee for this procedure is about 5000bir.

Validity

• Validity for 60 days.
• After the first renewal validity is for 1 year.
• Renewal is required every one year.

• In Ethiopia, an understanding of firearm safety and the law, tested in a theoretical and/or practical training course is not required for a firearm licence
• In Ethiopia, private possession of handguns (pistols and revolvers) is permitted under license.
