Renewing your driver's license

  • When your driver's license is about to expire, please contact one of the country's local authority who will assess whether you meet the conditions for renewing your license. List of different municipalities in Denmark
  • In case the license that you would like to renew has been expired for more than 3 years, you will need to take and pass a driving test (theory and practical) before you can obtain a new license.
  • Your new license will only be released after you surrender the previously issued driver's license or in some cases the provisional driving license.


Provisional Driver's License

If you need to renew your license, and you need to go outside the Nordic region before you receive your new license, you may apply to the municipal authority for a provisional renewal of your license. Preliminary renewal of a license is a license to be issued which will be valid for a period of 3 months. Application for interim renewal shall be submitted in connection with applications for renewal, and you must remember to carry a spare photograph.


Approval of your driving licenses application

Basically, it is the municipality that makes decisions regarding the driving license, including the conditions for its issuance. It is also the municipality that fixes driving tests and require payment. The Police holds driving tests and decides in some cases, on whether you qualify for a license or not. Use the contact information below to obtain more information, inquire about the procedure or if you want to appeal a decision made by the police or the local authority.


Appealing a Decision

It is the National Police, who handles appeals regarding decisions on the issuance of drivers license by the local authorities or by the police. If you want to appeal a decision, please send your complaint to the police or the municipality who issued the decision. The police or the local authority will then forward your complaint to the National Police.

Deadline: Four weeks from the day the decision was announced by the local authority or the police.

Processing time: Your appeal may be processed in 60 days from the date when all necessary information were gathered. Some cases may require a longer processing time, for example if the case is particularly complex or the National Police is processing a large a amount of complaints at that time.

Identification

To prove your identity, you must bring your any previously issued license of the EU model or your valid passport. If you do not have any of those, you can bring your original baptism, name or birth certificate, health card or other suitable identification document specially those that have a photo of you. Documents showing proof of your identity must be issued by a public authority

If you got an identification document but your birth date or birth place is not clearly stated in the document, you will need to providea certificate of identity where your birth date and birthplace clearly stated.

In case your full and used name does not appear in your identification papers, you may be asked to provide proof of the name change by producing a marriage certificate, a certificate of name or documentation for the marriage authority or the population register.

Other documents that you may be asked to submit:

  • Your driver's license
  • Photographs sample
  • Medical certificate issued by your own doctor if you need to renew your license because of your age, 70 years old and up. You will also be asked to submit this if you obtained a license with shorter validity due to your health condition or doubts about sobriety or independence to different psychoactive substances. You should also bring a medical certificate if you need to renew your driver's license for truck, bus and commercial passenger.

EligibilityEdit

Driving licenses are issued to individuals who normally resides in Denmark (that is for at least 185 days in each calendar year, due to personal or professional ties), or persons who can provide proof of having lived in Denmark for at least 6 months as a student.

Licenses may also be awarded to persons who have acquired Danish driving license and not ordinarily resident in Denmark or another EU or EEA country.

Any person whose license is restricted, suspended or revoked in another EU or EEA country may not be able to obtain a driver's license.



FeesEdit

Renewal Fees:

  • Renewal of driver's license (except for converted ones, IDL & Tourist License  : DKK 120
  • License holder who are 70 years old: 50 kr
  • Renewal of licenses is limited due to health conditions for applicants under 70 years of age: $ 0
  • Renewal of licenses for small truck, truck, small bus and bus with / without large trailer vehicle, and is under the age of 70 years: 155 DKK
  • Renewal of license for commercial passenger: DKK 280
  • Renewal of license for commercial passenger, and its issuance was limited due to the holders medical condition: DKK 120
  • Renewal of license with instructor approval: DKK 280



ValidityEdit

The following driving licenses are normally valid for a period of 15 years:

  • AM (small and large moped)
  • A1 (small motorcycle)
  • A2 (medium bike)
  • A (big bike)
  • B (regular car)
  • B / E (car with large trailer)
  • Driving license for tractor / power equipment

The following driving licenses are normally valid for a period of 5 years:

  • C1 (small truck)
  • C (lorry)
  • D1 (small bus)
  • D (large bus)
  • C1 / E, C / E, D1 / E, D / E (above, with large trailer)
  • Driving license for commercial passenger.

Validity of the driver's license may be shorter than five years depending on your age and your health situation.

If at the time of issue of the license you are aged between 65 and 70 years old the license will be valid for five years. For those older than 70 years old when the license was issued, its validity will be as follows:

  • For those aged between 70 - 71 years old: 4 years
  • For those aged between 71 - 72 years old: 3 years
  • For those aged between 72 - 80 years old: 2 years
  • For those over the age of 80: 1 year


Provisional Driver's License: 3 months

InstructionsEdit

Renewal applications are submitted to municipal authorities regardless where you live.

Application for renewal of license for category C1, C1 / E, C, C / E, D1, D1 / E, D and D / E and license for commercial passenger and driver's license with an endorsement for approval as an instructor must be accompanied by a photograph and a medical certificate.

Application for renewal of licenses for categories AM, A1, A2, A, B and B / E must be accompanied by a photograph, and applicant must be able to show proof of identity.

A medical certificate must also be submitted when renewing your license, this will depend on the applicant's age and medical condition.
