  2. Enclose a copy of the photo page of your passport and a copy of your Danish residence permit (if applicable).
  3. Send the invitation (including copy of photo and any residence permit) or the invitation ID to your guest.

For the guest (applicant):

  1. Visa applications should be submitted at a Danish diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate general). You must submit your visa application in person.
  2. You will need to be fingerprinted if you submit your application to a diplomatic mission where the Schengen visa system has been rolled out. You may also be called in for an interview after submitting your application.
  3. Upon submission of the application a stamp indicating that the application is admissible shall be placed in the passport or travel document by the embassy or consulate. This stamp has no legal implications and will be covered by a visa sticker if the visa is granted.

Notes:

  • When the Immigration Service receives a visa application, it will send an invitation form (VU1 or VU2) to the person you have indicated will be your host, if you have not already submitted an invitation form or invitation ID at the diplomatic mission. Since the Immigration Service sends the invitation form to the host's address listed on the application, please make sure that your host's address in Denmark is correct.
  • Do not forget to bring the invitation from your Danish host, either in the form of a printed invitation or an invitation ID, if the host submitted an online invitation when you submit your application.
  • You will also need to bring proof that you have travel insurance covering the entire Schengen area which is valid for the expected duration of your stay. The minimum coverage must be 30,000
  • Bring a valid passport or other form of travel document
  • Contact or check the embassy's website to find out whether there are any country-specific requirements, and which documentation you need to bring. Foreign Ministry's list of Danish representations abroad
  • The Immigration Service recommends that you do not purchase a plane ticket before receiving your visa. However, local agreements between Schengen countries representations may imply that you must have bought a plane ticket, why you should check the embassy's website, to find out which documentation is required when submitting a visa application.

What the host must do:

  1. Complete an invitation. There are three different types of invitations you as a host can use when inviting a foreign national who must hold a visa to visit you in Denmark.
  2. Enclose a copy of the photo page of your passport and a copy of your Danish residence permit (if applicable).
  3. Send the invitation (including copy of photo and any residence permit) or the invitation ID to your guest.

The type of visa to obtain depends on whether the host, is:

  • a company/organisation etc. with no advance approval which invites a foreign national, including cultural, scientific, and sports related visits
  • a private individual who invites a friend or family member

NOTES:

  • You can only use online invitation forms if the applicant submits his/her application at a Danish diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate general). If the applicant submits his/her application at another country's diplomatic mission, such as a Swedish or Norwegian embassy, the online invitation forms can only be used to a limited extent. You should not send an invitation to the Danish Immigration Service.
  • If you have used an online invitation form, you can follow the visa case online on My Page. Log in using the digital signature or NemID you used when you filed the online invitation form. You will be able to see whether the applicant has gone to the diplomatic mission to submit his/her application, whether the application has been forwarded to the Immigration Service in Denmark for further processing, and whether a decision has been made in the case.

Submitting an application

Visa applications should be submitted at a Danish diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate general).

You may not submit your application earlier than three months before your expected date of arrival in Denmark. If you already hold a multiple-entry visa valid for more than 180 days, you can apply earlier. Read more about duration.

Applications are normally submitted in your country of residence. You can submit it in another country if you are there legally and there is a valid reason for not submitting the application in your country of residence.

You must submit your visa application in person. You will need to be fingerprinted if you submit your application to a diplomatic mission where the Schengen visa system has been rolled out. You may also be called in for an interview after submitting your application.

Representation agreement: In some countries, there is no Danish diplomatic mission to process visa applications. In such countries, Denmark will generally have a representation agreement with the diplomatic mission of another Schengen country to handle visa applications for Denmark. To know more - Link
