Procedure

Apply in-Person

1. This declaration for Renunciation of Citizenship is made by any person wishing to renounce their Botswana Citizenship should visit the Ministry of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs, Department of Immigration and Citizenship, Regional or District Immigration Offices, and Botswana Missions Abroad. (Contact details listed below)
2. Applicants are required to collect Form R Declaration of Renunciation/Abandonment of Citizenship of Botswana, and fill out all required sections accurately. Forms are available for free at the front desk at any of the immigration offices or Botswana Missions abroad
3. Submit the completed forms, attach to the relevant supporting document file {as listed under the required document section below} to the department concerned attending officer.
4. The officer will then verify, if all the necessary information and documents have been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria, if everything is in the order you will be required to pay the application fee at the cash counter.
5. It is only after the deposit of the complete file and the payment of the required fee, that the application file will be registered and recorded and applicants will be issued with an acknowledgment letter containing details of their application.
6. The completed application file will then be forwarded to an authorized officer (via designated channels) at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship office in Botswana for evaluation, processing, and recommendation, which is within a month.
7. If your application is successful, a letter of renunciation will be sent to you by mail or issued in person at the immigration office/mission abroad against the acknowledgment slip.
8. After receipt of the renunciation letter, the applicant will be required to surrender all Botswana government official documents {national identity card, driver’s license, Passport} that he/she holds immediately to the nearest Immigration Offices or Mission.

Required Documents

• Two (2) recent colored passport size photos (not computer-generated photos)
• Complete a Certificate of Origin form obtained from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship
• Proof of citizenship from another country
• A police report from a foreign country with the applicant’s fingerprints
• Certified copy of a birth certificate or affidavit in lieu of the birth certificate
• Certified copy of parent’s citizenship status

Eligibility

• Any citizen of Botswana of full age and capacity who is also a citizen of any country; or a national of a foreign country, is eligible to make the application to renounce their Botswana Citizenship.
• The individual must be:-
  • Must be aged 18 and above (Age will not be taken into account if the woman is married)
  • Must have a sound mind
  • Must have or will soon obtain foreign citizenship
  • Has acquired or would likely be granted citizenship in another country
  • Has no criminal or financial liability to the state

Fees

• The cost associated with this service is BWP 10.00.

Validity

• The validity period is forever.
