Procedure

Apply In Person

1. The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Botswana (NMCB) usually informs the general public through various media outlets, on the dates and hours for renewal of the practice nursing license and a list of decentralized facilities where payment of the renewal license fee can be made. 2. All nurses and midwives registered with NMCB, either employed by the government, working in the private institutions or retired, etc, shall file the application in writing using a prescribed application form, obtainable either at the NMCB offices or from CPD TOTs and shall be accompanied by all the supporting documentation as listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page. Any omission of the required documents or information will render the application process incomplete.
3. Please note, that payment for the renewal license fee can be made either at the NMCB offices or at any of the listed decentralized facilities and that the applicant should submit the following documents (listed below) to be validated by the attending officer.
   • Copy of expiring practicing certificate.
   • Letter for validation of CPD points from CPD TOTs.
   • Valid applicable identification document.
4. Upon making payment the applicant is issued with a payment receipt that should be attached to the application file.
5. The completed application file should then be submitted to the NMCB offices for consideration before the submission deadline.
6. Upon receipt of the application, the receiving officer will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified.
7. If the NMCB officer is satisfied that all the requirements have been met for the application for the license, the application is registered for processing and consideration.
8. The applicant is issued with an NMCB payment slip and an acknowledgment slip as proof of submission of the application and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
9. After successful processing of the submitted documents, when all regulatory requirements for approval of the license are satisfactorily met, the Licensing officer shall prepare the renewed license that shall be valid for one year from the date of issue, which indicate the approval scope and limitations.
10. Notice of the decision (Approval, Deferral, or Rejection) for the application will be communicated to the applicant by phone or mail.
11. While collecting the license the applicants will be required to produce their identity document and proof of payment of the license fee to be validated by the license dispatch office/section.
12. While collecting the license the applicants will be required to produce the NMCB acknowledgment letter and identity document and proof of payment of the license fee to be validated by the licensing office, applicant will be required to surrender their expired license before being issued with the renewed license.

NB: Registration renewals can also be done at the NMCB office in Gaborone. CPD points are prerequisite for renewals unless if one qualifies to be exempted.

• Receipt as proof of payment if the payment was done at decentralized facilities.

• Any registered nursers or midwives that need to renew their practice license are eligible to apply.

Validity

• The vadility of the practice license is one year and it shall remain valid for that specified period unless revoked, cancelled or suspended by the authority.

Need for the Document

• All registered health professional with the NMCB are required to renew their practice license to be able to practice medicine in Botswana.
• It is illegal to employ a Nurse or Midwife not registered with NMCB or who does not have a valid practising certificate.
