Apply In Person
- The application to Register as Professional Engineer shall be made to the Engineering Registration Board (ERB), whose mandate is to ensure the highest standards of engineering practice in Botswana and protect the welfare and interest of the public in the engineering practice engineering work in Botswana is done for the public good. - Applicants are required to collect and complete the Application Form for Professional Registration, obtainable at the ERB registrar’s office or download it via the ERB website ERB Application Forms, or download it directly using this link, Application Form for Professional Registration
- Submit the supporting documentation as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page, in addition to the duly completed application form in all respect to the ERA registrar's office. Any omission of these documents will render the registration process incomplete.
- The applicant will be required to pay the registration fee (non-refundable) which is payable either by depositing it into the ERB account or can be received through the Point of Sale (POS) machine (swiping machine) at the ERB offices. Alternatively, you can pay by cheque written in favour of the Engineers Registration Board. No cash is handled at the ERB offices and as such, you should not give anybody any money for them to assist you. (Refer to “Fee” section of this page for the fee schedule and bank details)
- Upon receipt of the application file, the registrar will verify if all the necessary information and documentation has been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria before registering the application file for assessment and consideration by the Board which is within six (6) to twelve (12) weeks provided everything is in order.
- Applicants will be issued with an ERB payment receipt and an acknowledgment slip as proof of submission of the application and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
- Upon receipt of the application file, the board shall approve the applicant to be registered as a Professional engineer where it is satisfied that-
- That he/she is a fit and proper person to be registered as an engineer.
- Has passed any other examination or interview as the Board may determine
- Has presented evidence of prior learning in engineering.
- Has demonstrated his competence as measured against standards as may be determined by the Board for registration under that category.
- The board may require an applicant to furnish them with additional information or evidence of eligibility for registration as it may think fit and may summon the applicant, to appear personal before the board or subcommittee for an interview.
- Notice of the decision (Approval, Deferral, or Rejection) for the application will be communicated to the client by letter, SMS or the client preferable notification method.
- If approved, the board will direct the registrar to register the applicant as an engineer and draw up the registration certificate as directed by the board to be issued to the client, upon presenting their identity document, approval letter and proof of payment of the registration fee to be validated by the registrar's office at the ERB.
- If your application was not successful, you will be notified of that outcome. You may then be refunded the money you paid except for the non-refundable application fee.

- Applicants can submit the application via the ERB website Registration Link and click on the “Create New Account” option, fill out the registration form then click on the “Submit” tab.
- Upon successfully registering, on the next page select “Registration process” then select “Registration” then click on the “CREATE +” tab.
- You will be redirected to the Registration Page, fill out all applicable fields, upload the certified true copies of the supporting documents as mentioned under the “Required Document” section below. Any omission of these documents will render the registration process incomplete. Then click on the “Submit” tab.
- The Application shall be accompanied by an application fee (Non-refundable) payable directly to the Engineers Registration Board bank account. (Refer to “Fee” section of this page for the fee schedule and bank details).
- Applicants will receive an acknowledgment mail as proof of submission of the application.
- Upon receipt of the application file, the officer in charge will verify if all the necessary information and documentation has been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria before registering the application file for assessment and consideration by the board, which is within six (6) to twelve (12) weeks provided everything is in order.
- The board shall approve the applicant to be registered as a Professional engineer where it is satisfied that-
- That he/she is a fit and proper person to be registered as an engineer.

EligibilityEdit
To be eligible to apply, applicants must meet the following criteria,
- a member of an institution of engineers, the membership of which is recognized by the Board as furnishing a sufficient guarantee of the required academic knowledge of, and practical experience in, engineering, or
- a person who is the holder of a technology degree or degree, diploma or licence of a university or school of engineering which is recognized by the Board as furnishing sufficient evidence of an adequate academic training in engineering, and
- Have more than four (4) years post qualification experience in the engineering discipline you want to register for.

PAYMENT METHOD NOTES:
- The accepted method of payment is direct deposits into the ERB bank account or using your debit or credit card at the POS machine available at the ERB offices.
- No cash will be accepted at ERB Offices. Cheques sent to ERB by post will also not be accepted. ERB will take no responsibility for cheques lost in the post or intercepted and fraudulently banked in another party’s bank account.
- When payments are made at the Bank, an applicant must quote their full name as the reference.

Categories of registration
- A person who is resident in Botswana and is desirous to be registered in the engineers’ profession shall apply to the Engineer Registration Board to be registered as-
- a professional engineer;
- a registered engineer;
- an engineering technologist, either as-
- a professional engineering technologist,
- a registered engineering technologist, or
- a graduate engineering technologist;
- an engineering technician, either as-
- a professional engineering technician,
- a registered engineering technician, or
- a graduate engineering technician; or
- A graduate engineer.
- An engineer who is registered under sub regulation (1)(b) shall undertake the practice of engineering under the supervision of a professional engineer registered under sub-regulation (1)(a) and who holds a practising certificate in respect of a branch of engineering in which he or she is qualified to practise.
- An engineer who is registered under sub regulation (1)(e) shall undertake the practice of engineering under the supervision and control of an engineer registered under sub regulation (1)(a) or (1)(b) who holds a practising certificate in respect of the branch of engineering in which he or she is qualified to practise.
- Notwithstanding the provisions of sub regulation (1), the engineering disciplines in respect of which a person may apply for registration as an engineer are-
- civil engineering;
- electrical and electronic engineering;
- mechanical engineering;
- mining engineering;
- environmental engineering;
- industrial engineering;
- chemical engineering;
- metallurgical engineering;
- aeronautical engineering;
- mechatronics engineering;
- building services engineering;
- telecommunications engineering;
- computer engineering;
- agricultural engineering; or
- Structural engineering.

- A Professional Engineer Registration Certificate is a document that proves that the holder has been registered and certified by the Engineers Registration Board (ERB).
- Registering as a Professional Engineer shows peers, employers, and clients that one has demonstrated a commitment to professional standards and code of professional ethics, and to developing and enhancing competence.

- An Engineer Registration Certificate shows that one has met the requirements to join the engineering profession under regulations by ERB. Once granted, it does not expire. The Registration Certificate alone does not allow one too lawfully to perform engineering work, they also need a current Practicing certificate and a have Referees for the certificate of good conduct and character.
- The practicing certificate allows a person to lawfully execute the works of an Engineer. The practicing certificate expires annually.
