Apply In Person

  1. The application to obtain a Ground Instructor License shall be made to the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) office. CAAB Contact Details
  2. Applicants will be required to collect and complete the forms, Application form for the flight/ground instructor rating. Obtainable at the CAAB office, Personnel Licensing (PEL) unit or download it via the CAAB website CAAB Application Forms or directly download them using this link, Application form for a flight/ground instructor rating.
  3. The duly completed forms, attached to the supporting documents as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section, should be submitted to the CAAB head office, Personnel Licensing (PEL) unit, for consideration. Any omission of the required information or documents will render the application process incomplete.
  4. Upon receipt of the application, the Personnel Licensing (PEL) officers will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified corrected.
  5. If the PEL officer is satisfied that all the requirements have been met for the application for the license, the application is registered for processing and consideration.
  6. Applicants will be required to pay prescribed fees as mentioned on the CAAB fee schedule, refer to the “Fees” section of this page, which is payable either in cash at the CAAB cashier counter/accounts office or by cheque in favour of the CAAB.
  7. The applicant is issued with a payment slip and an acknowledgment slip as proof of submission of the application and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
  8. Applicants will be required to take a Botswana Air law Examinations (Knowledge test and practical), which shall be conducted by a PEL Inspector.
  9. Please note, that it is compulsory to be in possession of a valid identity document or passport to enter and attempt these examinations.
  10. Having successfully passed the Botswana Air law Examinations, PEL Inspector will issue the applicant a completed and certified, Ground Instructors Oversight Report
  11. The PEL Inspector will forward the application file attached to the Ground Instructors Oversight Report to the CAAB Director for the final decision.
  12. Notice of the decision (Approval, Deferral, or Rejection) for the application will be communicated to the client in writing or by phone.
  13. When all regulatory requirements for approval of the license are satisfactorily met, the Authority shall prepare and issue to the applicant the License that shall be valid for a specific period and shall indicate the approval scope and limitations.
  14. While collecting the license applicants will be required to procedure their identification document, acknowledgment slip/approval letter, proof of payment of the prescribed license fee to be validated by the CAAB (PEL) office.
  15. The applicant will be made to, sign on the signature pad/book and will be issued with the printed License.

  • Properly completed application form Application form for a flight/ground instructor rating.
  • A knowledge test report and/or skill test report conducted by a PEL Inspector.
  • Two (2) color passport size recent photographs (full face).
  • Valid identity document (passport/Identity card).
  • A certificate issued by an Authorized Training Organization indicates satisfactory completion of the training.
  • Any previously held license i.e. Commercial Pilot License or Airline Transport Pilot License (i.e. these licenses could be valid or expired) as appropriate.
  • Payment receipt of the prescribed fees.
  • Any other additional documents requested for be the CAAB.

EligibilityEdit

An applicant for a ground instructor license shall:

  • Be at least eighteen years of age.
  • Demonstrates the ability to read, speak, write, and understand the English language in accordance with the language proficiency requirements and obtain either of the following ratings;
  • Operational Level (Level 4); Valid for 3 years
  • Extended Level (Level 5); Valid for 6 years
  • Expert Level (Level 6); Valid for Life.
  • Pass a knowledge test on the fundamentals of instructing.
  • The knowledge test results for a ground instructor license shall be valid for eighteen months after passing the examination.
  • The knowledge test specified above is not required if the applicant holds a flight instructor rating.
  • Pass a knowledge test on the aeronautical knowledge areas specified in PPL, CPL, and ATPL.
  • A ground instructor license shall be issued with either one of the following ratings:
  • Basic;
  • Advanced;
  • Instrument; or
  • Basic and Instrument
  • Advanced and Instrument
  • For an applicant for a ground instructor license to acquire the above ratings, he or she is required to hold or have held a Commercial Pilot License or Airline Transport Pilot License (i.e. these licenses could be valid or expired) as appropriate.
  • If an applicant does not hold the above licenses, then he/she should pass the following—
  • Basic ground instructor rating; aeronautical knowledge requirements for Commercial Pilot License.
  • Advanced ground instructor rating; aeronautical knowledge requirements for Airline Transport Pilot License.
  • Instrument ground instructor rating; meet the requirements of either Basic ground instructor rating or advanced ground instructor rating.
  • Be a holder of a valid instrument rating.

  • The validity of the ground instructor license will be mentioned on the license, the license shall remain valid for that specified period unless suspended, revoked, or cancelled by the authority.
