An Emergency Travel Certificate is a travel document issued to citizens of Botswana to enable them to travel within a short period of time on an emergency basis to neighboring countries except for South Africa or stranded Botswana citizens abroad to travel back to botswana in lieu of a Botswana Paasport. Within Botswana

  1. Those eligible to apply should collect the Emergency Travel Document Application form; this form can only be accessed from the immigration offices and are not available online. For security reasons, the form can only be filled in the presence of an immigration officer. The form cannot be taken out of the office.
  2. In the case of parent(s) or guardian(s) applying for an e- Emergency Travel Document for persons aged 16 years or younger, bring the child to the office when applying.
  3. Upon obtaining the application forms, the applicant should legibly complete the forms, attach the relevant supporting documentation as listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page. The complete file should be submitted to the nearest immigration offices. Any omission of the supporting documents will render the application process incomplete.
  4. The application shall be accompanied by a service fee of BWP.12.00. All payments should be made as per the Department's preferable payment mode.
  5. Upon submission of the application, the immigration officer will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified corrected.
  6. Where all requirements of the application have been met the applicant is issued with an acknowledgment slip that serves as proof of submission of the application and should be produced and surrendered to the immigration office when collecting the document.
  7. Check the outcome of the application from the Office in which the application was made within 24 hours.
  8. While collecting the Emergency Travel Document applicants will be required to produce their identity card and surrender the acknowledgment slip to the immigration office.


Abroad Application

  1. For abroad application, applicants are required to visit the nearest Botswana mission abroad, for countries without the Botswana embassy/High commission/ consulate applicants should contact the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation in Botswana for assistance.   2. It should be noted that some of the embassy offices require applicants to first book an appointment with them before heading to their offices. An appointment can be booked either by phone or mail.
  3. In the case of parent(s) or guardian(s) applying for an e-Emergency Travel Document for persons aged 16 years or younger, bring the child to the office when applying.
  4. Obtain, the Emergency Travel Document Application form can only be accessed from the consulate offices and are not available online. For security reasons, the form can only be filled in the presence of a consular officer. The form cannot be taken out of the office.
  5. However, some of the embassies, do send the application form to the applicant by mail upon request, E.g., the Botswana embassy in Washington DC. Applicants can check if such services are provided by the Botswana embassy near them.
  6. Upon obtaining the application forms, the applicant should legibly complete the forms, attach the relevant supporting documentation as listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page. The complete file should be submitted to the Botswana mission offices as per the mission preferable submission mode (in person, post, mail). Any omission of the supporting documents will render the application process incomplete.
  7. The application shall be accompanied by a service fee as may be prescribed by the embassy office, and all payments should be made as per the embassy's preferable payment mode and proof of payment should be submitted for verification by the embassy office.
  8. The application file is then forwarded to Botswana's centralized production center for processing. Upon successful processing, the civil registration document is returned to the embassy/consulate where the application was filed to be issued/ collected by the client against the waiting card/slip and identification document.


Please Note:
Applicants who want their processed Civil Registration Document sent to them by post are advised to attach one of the following to their request(s):
  • A registered self-addressed envelope with the appropriate stamps (letter recommended;
  • A pre-paid envelope from any recognized courier service provider.
Not all embassies offer the post/mail return service (please consult with the embassy)Applicants can file the application for the emergency travel document via mail, in some embassies, please confirm with the nearest embassy, if they offer this service since not all embassies offer the service.

Required DocumentsEdit

Required documents within Botswana application For persons aged 16 years and above:

  • Original Omang Card and one certified copy of Omang.
  • Citizenship certificate of parents and/or applicant if parents were once foreign nationals (seek Clarification from Passport and Citizen Officers).
  • Omang details for parent(s) as well as details of parent's place of birth.
  • Old passport (physical copy) or for lost passport please bring the police report or affidavit before the commissioner of oath. The forms are collected by the applicant or parent if under 16 years of age.


For children under 16 years of age:
Original birth certificate and one certified copy of the birth certificate.

  • Original Omang Card of parent(s).
  • Guardian’s original Omang Card (in case of deceased or missing parents).
  • Death certificate(s) of deceased parent(s) if applicable.
  • Letter from District Commissioner, Chief, or Social Worker for proof of guardianship in the case of guardian(s) applying for the child’s e-passport.
  • Old passport of the child.
  • Citizenship certificate of parents and/or owner (registration) if parents were once foreign nationals (seek clarification from Passport and Citizen Officers).


Required document for abroad application

  • Cover letter (explaining the need for Emergency Travel Document)
  • Prove payment of the prescribed fee. (money order)
  • 2 full-color passport photos
  • Original birth certificate and certified copy of the birth certificate

In the case where a Botswana citizen has had his/her passport lost or stolen or expired he/she is issued an Emergency Travel document, which is a one-way travel document to enable them to travel to Botswana in lieu of a Botswana passport.
