How to Apply
Apply In-Person

  1. Applicants should visit the nearest Department of Road Transport and Safety Offices {DRTS} located countrywide, for the application process for the Professional Driving Permit (PrDPS) {see address details below}.
  2. Collect the following application forms freely available at the any of the offices of the Department of Road Transport and Safety Enquiries Desk , i.e. DL 1 - Botswana Driving Licence Application form and Health Declaration form (DL31) or use this links to download;
  3. Applicants that are applying PrDP driving license for passenger/ special, should submit the DL1 License application form to the nearest Botswana Police Offices for fingerprints clearance {Police clearance}.
    • Note; applicants applying PrDP driving license for goods and hazardous, do not need the police clearance.
  4. Applicants should then head to any government approved public or private hospital and submit the Health Declaration form (DL31) to a registered Medical Officer for the physical medical evaluation at a cost, after the examination the medical officer will fill, sign, stamp the form and issue it back.
  5. Applicant should then visit the nearest Department of Road Transport and Safety Offices {DRTS} and submit the completed forms along with relevant supporting documents {as listed below under required documents section} to the licensing officer for assessment and processing.
  6. The DRTS licensing officer shall then verify that all the necessary information and documents have been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria.
  7. If everything is in order you will be ushered to the eye screening office at the DRTS for eye examination.
  8. In case of applicants with eyesight challenges, the Registration and Licensing Officer would refer them to be seen by an external Eye Specialist for further testing. Only after the external eye specialist recommends that the driving licence application process be continued, should the applicants return to the Registration and Licensing Officer with the results and recommendations.
  9. Upon passing the eye examination or returning with eye test results and recommendations from an external eye specialist as the case maybe, you will be required to pay for the license fee at the DRTS cash counter.
  10. Upon making payment your license application will be processed and you will be issued with the license immediately.

  • Completed application form (DL1)
  • Valid eye screening result slip form (DL8) from DRTS/Private and Government Hospital

  • Taxis, call cabs and Minibus are reserved for Botswana nationals therefore non-citizens may only apply for Midi bus – Train bus.

Important Notes

  • Penalties for late renewal the Professional Driving Permit (PrDPS) for all categories is BWP 20.00 per day (excluding public holidays and weekend) for renewals after the expiry date, up to a maximum of BWP 2,000.00.

  • To drive on a public road in Botswana either for the transportation of goods, dangerous goods or passengers for an income you must have a professional driving permit (PrDP).


Information which might helpEdit

The professional driving permit {PrDPS} is issued in addition to an ordinary driving license. A PrDP applies to the following motor vehicle categories:

  • a goods vehicle with a gross vehicle mass exceeding 3 500kg
  • a breakdown vehicle or a bus
  • a minibus weighing more than 3 500kg or designed to carry 12 or more people (the driver included)
  • light motor vehicles, indicated in the economic sector for carrying passengers for reward (taxi-cab)
  • a motor vehicle designed to carry 12 or more people
  • any vehicle for which an operating license is issued
  • Dangerous goods vehicle (e.g. fuel tanker).
