Procedure

Apply In-Person

1. To apply for Plot Inheritance, applicants should first Visit the local tribal administration office (Kgotla) and request a declaration letter confirming the inheritance or allocation. Botswana Bogosi or Tribal Chieftainship
2. Upon obtaining the declaration letter, applicants are required to gather all the supporting documentation listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page and head to the Botswana Land Board or Sub Land Board office within their jurisdiction Botswana Land Board or Sub Land Board contact details
3. Applicants are required to collect the Application for transfer of land rights form, Copies of the Application Form are available for free at any of the Botswana Land Board or Sub Land Board office or the department of land office or download it directly using this Application form Link
4. The application form duly completed in all respect, and the supporting documentation should be submitted to the Botswana Land Board or Sub Land Board office within their jurisdiction.
5. The receiving officer will then verify that all the necessary documentation has been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria before registering the file for the processing which is within 3 months.
6. Applicants will then be issued with an acknowledgment letter as proof of submission of the application.
7. Clients will be contacted to set an appointment with the land board office for a site visit.
8. Both transferor and transferee must be present for a site visit of the plot with land board officials to confirm its existence and development status. (Only transferees can send representatives with authorization/representation letter and transferee’s certified ID copy).
9. After authentication and completion of the processing, if successful the plot inheritance certificate will be printed on a paper with special security features and issued to the applicant against their identity document and the acknowledgment letter.

• Certified copy of Omang/ID (heir, beneficiaries, or witnesses)
• Copy of death certificate of the previous owner
• Copy of marriage certificate (if not married Affidavit confirming marital status for business plots)
• Copy of Instrument signed under Married Persons Property Act (Marriage In/Out of community of property)
• Original Copy of the certificate of the late owner
• In case of plots that predate the land board, a letter from Bogosi confirming allocation
• Letter from Bogosi confirming inheritance
• Resolution from beneficiaries indicating heir / will
• Letter from the heir accepting the inheritance

Need for the Document

Plot Inheritance is the process of obtaining land rights (property) from someone who is no longer alive. This applies to land allocated by both Land board and Chiefs.
