Procedure

Apply In Person
International Standard Book Numbers (ISBN)

1. For the Registration process for International Standard Book Numbers (ISBN), the applicant should visit the National Reference Library (NRL) or any public library near you to apply (Address details listed below under “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page).
2. Express your interest to the receptionist/ secretariat front desk and Collect the ISBN Application Form or download it directly via this link;Link

   • Note: This form is to be filled with assistance from the library staff.

3. Submit the completed forms, attach to the supporting document file {as listed under the required document section below} to be verified by the library staff.
4. If the authorized staff is satisfied that you have complied with all the requirements as set for the registration, you will then be issued with a certified copy of the completed form indicating the International Standard Book Number (ISBN), immediately.
5. You (author or publisher) will then be required to deposit two copies with the National Reference Library (NRL).
   

Via email

1. The completed ISBN Application Form, attach to the supporting document file {as listed under the required document section below} can be submitted via this email address [email protected] for processing.
2. Upon receipt of the application file, it is processed by an authorized officer, and a certified copy of the completed form indicating the International Standard Book Number (ISBN), will be sent to you via email.

International Standard Serial Number (ISSN)

• For the application of International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), the application is filed online via this link; Link, and processed by an international body. Please refer to the “Information that may help “section of this page for more information.

Required Documents

• National identity card (Omang) for citizens
• Certified copy of the Bio-page of passport for non-citizens
• ISBN Application: a copy of book cover, title, introduction pages for the book, and the brief abstract/summary of the book. For a novel, only the cover and title pages are submitted
• ISSN Application: a copy of the cover page showing the frequency of the serial and the editorial page

Eligibility

• Any individual or publishing entity intending to publish their work in Botswana.

Fees

• No fee associate with the service when applying for an ISBN.
• An ISSN request shall cost between 25 € and 50 € {s.t.d cost) as per the country the publisher is located in. Service packages are also available on request.
• The cost of an urgent request is the double of the cost of a standard assignment request

Validity

Explain the time until which the certificate/document is valid.

Processing Time

The time around for processing the application;

• ISBN's are locally derived and can be completed in as little as ten minutes.
• ISSN's are obtained from Paris and will take up to twenty (20) working days from the date the completed application form and relevant documents are received.
• Urgent ISSN assignment requests are processed within five (5) working days at maximum

Instructions

IMPORTANT NOTE:

• When the book is ready for distribution, send two copies free to the Botswana National Library Service, Private Bag 0036, Gaborone. This is a legal requirement covered under the National Library Act Chapter 58:02 section 10 under the laws of Botswana.

Required Information

• Author name
• Book title
• Publisher postal address
• Signature of the author/publisher
• Due date of publication
• Identification number of the publisher/author

Need for the Document

• The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a unique identification number of a book, while the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is a serial number used to uniquely identify a serial publication. These numbers are issued to publishers and individual authors so that their authored work can be easily identified for consumption in the international market.
