Within Botswana Application

  1. To apply for an Electronic Passport, applicants are required to visit the Department of Immigration and Citizenship headquarter office, which is housed at the Ministry of Nationality, Immigration, and Gender Affairs office or the nearest Regional or district Immigration Offices.   2. In the case of parent(s) or guardian(s) applying for an e-passport for persons aged 16 years or younger, bring the child to the office when applying.
  3. Applicants should collect and complete the Passport Application form, Forms are not available online and are issued for free at any of the immigration offices.
  4. Submit the completed forms, attach to the relevant supporting document file {as listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page} to the department concerned attending officer.
  5. The officer will then verify, if all the necessary information and documentation have been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria, if everything is in the order you will be required to pay the application fee at the cash counter.
  6. It is only after the deposit of the complete file and the payment of the required fee, and present the payment receipt to be validated by the immigration officer.
  7. Your biometric data {photograph, fingerprint} will then be taken by the immigration officer, the application file will be registered and recorded and you will be issued with an acknowledgment letter/waiting card as proof of submission of the application.
  8. All application files will then be forwarded to a centralized production center for assessment and processed.
  9. If successful the passport is returned to the immigration office, where the application was filed to be issued/ collected by the client against the waiting card/slip and identification document.


Abroad application

  1. To apply for E-Passport Abroad, applicants are required to visit the nearest Botswana mission abroad, for countries without the Botswana embassy/High commission/ consulate applicants should contact the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation in Botswana for assistances (Address details are listed under the “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page).
  2. Please note that some of the embassy offices require applicants to first book an appointment with them before heading to the offices. An appointment can be booked either by phone or mail.
  3. In the case of parent(s) or guardian(s) applying for an e-passport for persons aged 16 years or younger, bring the child to the office when applying.
  4. Applicants should express their interest to the embassy/consulate authorized officer, and submit the appropriate supporting documents (as listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page) to the receiving officer, who will then verify that all the necessary documentation has been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria before issuing the applicant the appropriate Application form.
  5. Application forms can only be accessed from the High Commission/ embassy office and are not available online. For security reasons, the form can only be filled in the presence of a consular officer. The form cannot be taken out of the office.
  6. The completed forms with the attachments should be submitted to be verified and registered by the embassy/consulate authorized officer.
  7. Pay the prescribed application fee and provide fingerprints. At the time of submission, a waiting card/slip as an acknowledgment will be issued to the applicant as proof of submission of the application.
  8. The application file is then forwarded to Botswana's centralized production center for processing. Upon successful processing, the e-passport is returned to the embassy/consulate where the application was filed to be issued/ collected by the client against the waiting card/slip and identification document.

Required DocumentsEdit

For persons aged sixteen (16) years and above:

  • Original and one (1) certified copy of a National Identity card (Omang)
  • Citizenship certificate of parents and/or applicant if parents were once foreign nationals (seek Clarification from Passport and Citizen Officers).
  • National Identity card details for parent(s) as well as details of parent's place of birth.
  • Old passport (physical copy) and for lost passport bring the police report or affidavit before the commissioner of oath. The forms are collected by the applicant or parent if under sixteen (16) years of age.


For children under sixteen (16) years of age:

  • Original and one (1) certified copy of the birth certificate
  • Original Omang Card of parent(s).
  • Guardian’s original Omang Card (in case of deceased or missing parents).
  • Death certificate(s) of deceased parent(s) if applicable.
  • Letter from District Commissioner, Chief, or Social Worker for proof of guardianship in the case of guardian(s) applying for the child’s e-passport.
  • Old passport of the child.
  • Citizenship certificate of parents and/or owner (registration) if parents were once foreign nationals (seek clarification from Passport and Citizen Officers).


Note: The Immigration office or the embassy/high commission office reserve the right to request additional supporting documentation.

The legal normal process fee;

  • Children under 14 years: BWP 100.00.
  • Persons over 14 years BWP 260.00


Express services charges are;

  • P390 express service
  • P520 special service.


ValidityEdit

The e-passports for individuals who are 16 years and older are valid for 10 years and 5 years if they are under 16 years.

Normal services processing time

  • The passport takes five (5) working days to process (if applied outside Gaborone).
  • The passport takes three (3) days (if applied within Gaborone).
  • The passport will take 10 days if applied abroad.


Express services processing time;

  • Express service passport takes 48 hours to process.
  • Special service passport takes 24 hours to process.
