Procedure

Apply In Person

1. The application for Drivers Instructor License shall then be made to the Department of Road Transport and Safety (DRTS) offices countrywide. Department of Road Transport and Safety (DRTS) Offices Locations & Contact Details
2. Visit any of the driver trainers at the DRTS head office to register to enroll for the driving instructors' training course.
3. Enrolled candidates will be contacted prior to course commencement to complete the following forms; Application for a Botswana Driving license/permit form, and the Health Declaration form (DL31), forms are available at the Enquiries Desk at any of the offices of the Department of Road Transport and Safety or directly download them using this links
   • Application for Driving License Form-DL 1
   • Health Declaration form (DL31) (valid for 30 days).
4. Applicants will then be required to go to the eye screening office for an eye examination. In the case of applicants with eyesight challenges, the Registration and Licensing Officer at the Regional Department of Road Transport and Safety office would refer them to be seen by an external eye specialist for further testing.
5. Only after the external eye specialist recommends that the driving license extension classes application process will commence i.e. (Driver License Theory test and practical test) be continued should the applicants return to the Registration and Licensing Officer with the results and recommendations.
6. Applicants should then submit the duly completed application forms along with the relevant attachments as listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page, to the Registration and licensing Officer at the nearest Department of Road Transport and Safety office (DRTS) for approval.
7. Attend the Drivers Instructor courses, according to the provided schedule, after which applicant will have to go through Theory and Practical test.
8. Visit the Licensing and Registration Office at the DRTS Offices in Fairgrounds, Gold valley in Francistown and Maru-a-pula (Gaborone VTS), pay theory fees, and book theory test.
9. Applicants will then be advised to pay for the theory test, Question Booklet, and practical test please refer to the “Fees” section of this page for more information, payments shall be made at the DRTS cash counter and applicants are issued a payment receipt.
10. Present the payment receipt to the Registration and Licensing Officer, who will then book the applicant for the theory exams and issue him/her with an acknowledgment letter indicating the preferred method of testing (electronic or manual) and the appointed time and venue, where the theory test/ practical driving test will be conducted.
11. Applicants are required to arrive on time at the exam room and undergo the exams based on the instructions received for the chosen method.
12. Once successful, re-visit the Licensing & Registration Office to pay for and book practical driving test.  Please note that practical tests may be booked, paid for and undertaken only at the offices in Francistown (VTS), Gantsi, Lobatse, Mahalapye, Maru-a-pula (VTS) in Gaborone, Mochudi, Molepolole, Palapye only.
13. The applicant will be required to Undertake the two-step practical test (yard and road), in that order, Note; candidates are only allowed to do the road test after successful completion of the yard portion.
14. After passing all the tests, present all test results and documentation to the nearest Registration and Licensing office for payment of first issuance of the driving instructor's certificate.

Eligibility

All citizens and residents, who meet the below criteria may apply for a Driving Instructor Certificate:

• At least 21 years of age.
• The holder of a valid Botswana driving licence, for the desired class, for a minimum of 2 years.
• The holder of a valid Class B instructor's certificate (applicants for group 2 motor vehicles (C1, C, EC1, EC, and PrDP).  C1, C, EC1, & EC are heavy motor vehicles with a gross vehicle mass of more than 3500 kg.
• A holder of a minimum of Junior Secondary Certificate in Education (JSCE) or equivalent.
