Apply In-Person

  1. To apply for Civil Registration Documents Abroad, applicants are required to visit the nearest Botswana mission abroad, for countries without the Botswana embassy/High commission/ consulate applicants should contact the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation in Botswana for assistances.   2. Please note that some of the embassy offices require applicants to first book an appointment with them before heading to the offices. An appointment can be booked either by phone or mail.
  3. In the case of parent(s) or guardian(s) applying for an Omang or e-passport for persons aged 16 years or younger, bring the child to the office when applying.
  4. Applicants should express their interest to the embassy/consulate authorized officer, and submit the appropriate supporting documents (as listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page) to the receiving officer, who will then verify that all the necessary documentation has been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria before issuing the applicant the appropriate Application form.
  5. Note: Application forms can only be accessed from the High Commission/ embassy office and are not available online. For security reasons, the form can only be filled in the presence of a consular officer. The form cannot be taken out of the office.
  6. The completed forms with the attachments should be submitted to be verified and registered by the embassy/consulate authorized officer.
  7. Pay the prescribed application fee and provide fingerprints. At the time of submission, a waiting card/slip as an acknowledgment will be issued to the applicant as proof of submission of the application.
  8. The application file is then forwarded to Botswana's centralized production center for processing. Upon successful processing, the civil registration document is returned to the embassy/consulate where the application was filed to be issued/ collected by the client against the waiting card/slip and identification document.


Please Note:
Applicants who want their processed Civil Registration Document sent to them by post are advised to attach one of the following to their request(s):

  • A registered self-addressed envelope with the appropriate stamps (letter recommended;
  • A pre-paid envelope from any recognized courier service provider.

Please note: Not all embassies offer the post/mail return service (please consult with the embassy)
NOTE: You can file some of the civil registration document applications via mail, in some embassies, please confirm with your embassy, if they offer this service since not all embassies offer the service.

Requirements for First-time Omang Applicants

  • Birth certificate
  • One copy of each parents’ identity document (If one or both parents are Batswana, copies of their Omang are required. If one of the parents is a foreigner, a copy of their passport is required.)
  • 2 recent black and white passport-sized photographs
  • Citizenship certificate where applicable
  • Proof of payment of the application fee


Requirements for Renewing Omang

  • Expired Omang card (to be surrendered to the embassy officer)
  • 2 recent black and white passport-sized photographs
  • Citizenship certificate if applicable
  • Proof of payment of the application fee


Requirements for Replacing Lost Omang

  • An affidavit attesting to the lost Omang
  • 2 recent black and white passport-sized photographs
  • Citizenship certificate where applicable
  • Proof of payment of the application fee


E-Passport Requirements for 16years and Above

  • Valid Omang
  • Certified copy of the Parent’s valid Omang/details
  • 2 full-colored passport photos (35*45mm /1.37*1.77in)
  • Citizenship certificate if applicable
  • Proof of payment of the application fee


E-Passport Requirements for Minors (below age 16)

  • Parent’s identity documents
  • Birth certificate of the minor
  • Certified copy of the Parent’s valid Omang
  • Proof of citizenship if parent/s were once foreign nationals (naturalization/registration certificate)
  • 2 full-color passport photos
  • Previously held passport (if applicable)
  • Citizenship certificate if applicable
  • Proof of payment of the application fee


Requirements for Lost E-Passport

  • Valid Omang
  • Police report
  • Certified copy of the parent's identity card/or details
  • 2 full-color passport photos
  • Citizenship certificate if applicable
  • Proof of payment of the application fee


Requirements for Birth, Marriage or Death Certificate Requests

  • Covering Letter for the request
  • Valid proof of Identity (Omang and Passports)
  • Copy of old Birth, Marriage or Death certificates
  • Valid proof of Nationality
  • Affidavit for loss/damaged
  • Proof of payment of the application fee


Requirements for Authentication of Driver's License

  • Cover Letter.
  • Notarized copy of Driver's License.
  • Notarized copy of Omang/Passport.
  • Proof of payment of the application fee


Requirements for Police Clearance Certificate

  • Cover Letter (detail where you resided in Botswana).
  • Copy of Passport.
  • Copies of Work and Residence permits that you held when you stayed in Botswana
  • DNA fingerprints, original captured (not copies).
  • Proof of payment of the application fee


Note The embassy/high commission office reserve the right to request additional supporting documentation.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • The Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation facilitates applications by Batswana residing outside the country in the diaspora through the provision of access to services provided by other line Ministries.
  • These include facilitating applications for / Omang; National Passport; birth and death certificates; validation of driver’s licenses; and the repatriation of deceased persons to Botswana.
  • The Ministry also assists foreign nationals who are former residents of the Republic of Botswana with the issuance of police clearance certificates.
