Apply In-Person

  1. The application for registration of an Adopted Child over 3 Years Old as a citizen is made on behalf of the child by the adoptive parent(s), who is a citizen of Botswana; at either the Department of Immigration and Citizenship head office, which is housed at the Ministry of Nationality, Immigration, and Gender Affairs offices, or at the nearest Regional or District Immigration Offices or Botswana Missions abroad {Use this link to view the Ministry address detail: Link
  2. The Applicant accompanied by the child is required to visit any of the immigration office or mission abroad and express their interest to register the adopted child as a citizen of Botswana to the attending officer.
  3. Collect and complete Form C “Application for registration as Citizen of Botswana of Adopted Child over three (3) years old” Forms are not available online and are issued for free at any of the immigration offices or Botswana Missions abroad.
  4. Submit the completed forms, attach to the relevant supporting document file {as listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page} to the department concerned attending officer.
  5. The officer will then verify, if all the necessary information and documentation have been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria, if everything is in the order you will be required to pay the application fee at the cash counter.
  6. It is only after the deposit of the complete file and the payment of the required fee, that the application file will be registered and recorded and applicants will be issued with an acknowledgment letter as proof of submission of the application.
  7. The completed application file will then be forwarded to an authorized officer (via designated channels) at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship office in Botswana for evaluation, processing, and recommendation, which is within one month.
  8. The department of immigration is entitled to summon the applicant for an interview by way of a letter via post; if called upon;
  9. Applicants are then required to avail themselves for the interview at the immigration and citizenship office in Botswana, at the scheduled appointment date and time as outlined in the letter.
  10. If your application is successful, the immigration office will send a letter to you, to come to Immigration Offices to collect the outcome.
  11. If your application is rejected a rejection letter will be sent to you via mail. You can re-apply if you wish. (There is no time restriction for re-submission).
  12. The certificate of Registration as a Citizen will then be drawn up by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and made available for withdrawal by the applicant at the immigration offices or embassy/consulate office, where the application was filed, against the applicant's identification document and approval letter.

  • Proof of parents’ citizenship status e.g. Omang (Certified copies)
  • Set of Police report forms for children over 16 years old
  • Certified copy of adoptive parents’ marriage certificate
  • Application fee of P 50

EligibilityEdit

Applicant should meet the following requirement to be eligible;

  • The applicant must be a Motswana and must have an adopted child who is over three (3) years old.
  • The child must be legally adopted and must have a valid residence permit in Botswana.
  • The adopted child must be registered before the age of twenty-one (21) years old.

The application fee is BWP 50.00

ValidityEdit

The Certificate is Valid Forever and it is issued once i.e. there is no replacement if it gets lost/stolen/damaged.
