ProcedureEdit

Obtaining a transfer test certificate

Apply for a transfer test certificate at the Transport Control Department.

Before you come in to have your vehicle tested, make sure:

  • that you have set up an appointment with TCD to have the car transfer tested
  • the car looks presentable and everything works (please see the information sheet: Private car examination)
  • the car is still insured
  • the sale can be completed within one month of having the car transfer tested

At the time of the transfer test, you should give the examiner:

  • the bill of sale
  • the certificate of insurance
  • the car licence (if the car is being sold without licence plates)

After the car passes the transfer test, the examiner will give you:

  • a transfer test certificate valid for one month from the date the car was examined
  • your bill of sale
  • your certificate of insurance

Notes:

  • The buyer is responsible for the transfer registration fee which includes the cost of the transfer test.
  • If you are keeping your license plate number for your new car, the old car can be transfer tested without its number plates.
  • Selling your vehicle: The sale must be completed before the cars transfer test certificate expires one month after the test was conducted.

Transfer ownership

  1. The owner (seller) of the vehicle must complete the Bill of Sale.
  2. Give the completed Bill of Sale to the new owner; they must come into TCD with valid insurance, Bill of Sale, Assessment Form signed by the Landlord (if needed), and the (pass) transfer slip.
