Need for the DocumentEdit

Identity Card is a valid travel document that can be used in EU Member States and a number of neighboring countries. ID cards must not be confused with the proof of identity or residence permit issued by the relevant authorities in your country of residence. The latter two documents are only valid and officially recognized in the country of residence.

Since 1 December 2010 Belgian embassies and consulates switched to issuing eID cards.

Your identity card is proof that you are entered in the Population Register in Belgium. You can use it to prove your nationality and your identity. As a Belgian, you automatically receive an electronic identity card at the age of twelve. This is provided by your local Registry Office. From the age of fifteen you are required to carry your identity card with you at all times.
