ProcedureEdit

Apply In-person

  1. To obtain Scientific Research Permit, the applicant has to visit any nearest office of the Department of Marine Resources. The address and contact details can be found in the following link Address Details
  2. Visit the office and get an application form for Scientific Research Permit or tap on this link to download it Application Form
  3. Complete the application form with appropriate information under relevant sections.
  4. After filling the application form, make sure to attach all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
  5. Then, submit it in person to the relevant authority at the office.
  6. Pay the fees as per the authority’s quote.
  7. The application along with the attached documents will be forwarded for further verifications.
  8. Once all the internal processes are over, the applicants will be notified with the further instructions regarding the registration.

First time applicants are required to submit the following supporting documents:

  • Completed application form.
  • Copies of CVs for the researchers.
  • A passport-sized photo.
  • A letter of recommendation (if available).
  • Names of any publications.
  • Academic qualifications.
  • Completed past research projects to establish validity of research.
  • Copies of passport of all persons named on the application.

  This type of permit cannot be accessed via the Family Islands. All requests for scientific research permits must be sent to the Department of Marine Resources in New Providence for processing.

InstructionsEdit

For persons wishing to renew permits after one year, a letter with a request for renewal must be submitted to the Department of Marine Resources as well as a report of the previous study undertaken must be provided for consideration.


Required InformationEdit

  • Full names and addresses of person/s or body/es making application and name and address/es or sponsor/s where applicable
  • Type and purpose of proposed research in the Bahamas
  • Dates of proposed research project Name, Registered number and brief description of type of vessel, and/or other carrier to be used in the Bahamas
  • If applicant wishes to apply for duty-free imports of equipment to be used in connection with the research project, this must be listed below in full, together with details of value, (expendable supplies not included).
  • Date, port and method of arrival in the Bahamas of the Equipment noted above.
  • Precise location where proposed research is to be undertaken. (Attach sketch map of location)
  • Proposed cruise plan indicating ports of entry and exit with routes to be followed.
  • Specimens/Samples. If it is proposed to collect specimens or samples, please give full details, including use to which specimens/samples will be put.
  • If land based stations are required, please provide full details of location, equipment to be installed and number of persons who will staff the station
  • Particulars required of each member of the staff
  • Names and designations of scientists who will act as advisors to the project
  • Samples of any questionnaires to be used during the project should be returned with this form
