ProcedureEdit

Apply In-Person

  1. Applicants wishing to apply for a Garage Licence must apply to the Department of Physical Planning and the Buildings Control Division of the Ministry of Works & Urban Development. The address can be found in the “Office Location & Contacts” section.
  2. Application for a Licence to Operate a Garage may be collected at the Buildings Control Division of the Ministry of Works & Urban Development or can be downloaded here.
  3. Submit completed application form for a Garage Licence, along with location and surveyed site plan to Buildings Control Division of the Ministry of Works & Urban Development.
  4. For Family Island applicants, submit the application to the local administrator. Here is a link to contact: Link
  5. Arrange site inspection with Volatile Substances Inspector (Garages), to verify relevant code compliance.
  6. Pay relevant fees, depending on the type of garage operation.
    Note: Freeport applications are submitted to the Grand Bahama Port Authority Limited.
  7. Once approved a Garage Licence is issued to qualified applicants.
  8. Applicants are notified in writing and/or by phone that documents are ready for collection.
  9. Family Island applicants collect approved permit from the local government office.

  • Copy of Passport (first four pages).
  • Copy of Drivers Licence.
  • Copy of NIB Card.

Anyone who is interested in building can apply for the Garage License.

FeesEdit

Different types of operations on garage premises and the fees associated with each:

  • For Major repairs

Fee for Issue: BS$100.00 Renewal fee: BS$50.00
Transfer fees: BS$50.00
Replacement of license fee: BS$10.00

  • For Paint and body work

Fee for Issue:BS$100.00 Renewal fee:BS$50.00
Transfer fees:BS$50.00
Replacement of license fee:BS$10.00

  • For Wrecker’s Yard

Fee for Issue: BS$200.00 Renewal fee: BS$100.00
Transfer fees:BS$50.00
Replacement of license fee:BS$10.00

ValidityEdit

All Garage Licences must be renewed annually, on or before 30th June of each year.

Processing TimeEdit

  • A Garage Licence is processed within 30 days following the submission of all documents.
  • However, if there are any queries or deficiencies in the application the processing time will be lengthened.

InstructionsEdit

This licence cannot be transferred, nor can any changes be made in the operations covered by this licence without the prior written approval of the Minister.

Required InformationEdit

  • Name of applicant
  • Address and present occupation of applicant
  • State location and description of premises
  • Name of owner and particulars of any tenancy
  • Type of operations to be carried on at premises and estimated number of persons engaged in doing so.
  • Name of person who will manage operations
  • Date of issue of existing licence and name of licensee
  • Type of operation authorised by licence


Need for the DocumentEdit

Any person, be it a Car Mechanic or Auto Body Repairmen or Auto Body Painters or Wrecker’s Yard Operators, who intend to use a site for any of the following reasons must get a Garage Licence.

  • To repair or replace vehicle propulsion units, vehicle transmissions, vehicle chassis and any apparatus, including any electrical systems attached to it.
  • To repair and/or paint vehicle bodies.
  • To store old or damaged vehicles and/or parts of it.

The Minister will retain one copy of every application for a licence and one copy of all accompanying documents.
