A tourist visa is issued to a foreigner for purposes of visiting a country in which he /she does not hold citizenship. In Australia a tourist visa is for people visiting the country for a holiday, sightseeing, social or recreational reasons, to visit relatives, friends or for other short-term non-work purposes. A number of tourist visas are available for people wishing to visit Australia. These include:
- Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) (Subclass 976 / Subclass 601): This is an electronically stored authority for short-term visits to Australia of up to three months. Available to passport holders from a number of countries and regions, who live outside Australia.
- eVisitors (Subclass 651): it is also an electronically stored authority issued to nationals from the European Union and a number of other European countries, who live outside Australia for visits to Australia for tourism or business purposes for up to three months.
- Tourist visa (Subclass 676 / Subclass 600): this is a temporary visa which allows an applicant to stay in Australia of up to three or six or 12 months.
- Sponsored Family Visitor visa (Subclass 679): this is issued to people who wish to visit family in Australia for a stay period of up to 12 months.
