ProcedureEdit
Renew by MailEdit
You may renew your driver's license by mail if you have received a "renew by mail" package. Your license will be sent to you in the mail, and you will not have to go to an MVA office again until the new license expires. Simply complete the "mail in renewal" application and send it in if you have more than 15 days before your current license expires.
- Make sure that you have read the information carefully and that you are qualified to renew by mail. If you find any errors in your information, you must visit an MVA office to renew in person.
- Complete the renewal form.
- If you are over 40, you must have your doctor complete and sign the "vision certification" portion of your renewal form. Please note, the vision certification portion of the renewal form is the only form that can be "read" by the MVA technology that renews your license by mail. If you use a separate form, you must renew in person.
- Mail in your renewal with the proper fee.
- Your new license will be mailed to your address printed on your Maryland Mail-In Driver's License Renewal Application. You cannot renew your license by mail if your address does not match the address printed on your Maryland Mail-In Driver's License Renewal Application. The MVA cannot mail or forward a renewed license to an alternate address.
You cannot renew by mail if:
- Your social security number cannot be verified; OR
- Your address is incorrect on the renewal notice; OR
- Your address has changed; OR
- A request to correct or update your address has been submitted by you to the MVA since you received your Maryland Mail-In Driver's License Renewal Application.
Note: If you do not send in your renewal at least 15 days prior to expiration, your current license could expire before you receive the new license. It would then be best to go into an MVA office and renew in person.
Self Service KioskEdit
Maryland license holders who are eligible to renew online are eligible to renew at an MVA Self-Serve Kiosk. Drivers aged 40 and over must have their vision results submitted electronically by an Authorized Online Vision Certification Provider. The vision certification must be current, within twelve months of renewing.
You may not use a MVA Self-Serve Kiosk to renew your license if one of the following conditions exists:
- Your social security number cannot be verified; OR
- Your address is incorrect on the renewal notice; OR
- Your address has changed; OR
- A request to correct or update your address has been submitted by you to the MVA since you received your Maryland Mail-In Driver's License Renewal Application; OR
- You have suspensions, cancellations or revocations; OR
- You have a tax compliance flag; OR
- You have a suspension in another state; OR
- You are a commercial driver; OR
- You have an alert on your record.
Note: You cannot renew your license at an MVA Self-Serve Kiosk if your address does not match the address printed on your Maryland Mail-In Driver's License Renewal Application. The MVA cannot mail or forward a renewed license to an alternate address.
Renew in PersonEdit
- If you are not eligible to renew your drivers license online, by mail or MVA Self-Serve Kiosk, you will need to bring your expiring license and pay the appropriate fee to an MVA Branch Office.
- Applicants will be asked to complete a vision screening - vision requirement options.
Notes:
- If you have changed your name since your last license was issued, you must change your name with the Social Security Administration prior to coming to the MVA and bring the appropriate documentation that indicates how the name was changed (ex: marriage certificate, divorce decree).
- Drivers who are turning 21 years of age, who come into an MVA branch offices to change their drivers licenses, are no longer required to go to a kiosk to complete their transactions. They can be issued a ticket to be served at the counter and will receive a new photo and drivers license. These transactions will change sometime in the fall of 2015, when the drivers licenses for this age group will be centrally issued and will then be mailed to the drivers address on record at the MVA

ValidityEdit
A Maryland noncommercial driver's license issued to a customer who is 21 years of age or older may be valid for a maximum of 8 years. However, the Maryland MVA is phasing in the renewals of non-commercial drivers licenses for 5 to 8 years. During the phase-in period, the length of validity will be computer generated and the fees will vary according to the number of years for which the license will be valid.
Note: Individuals with a limited term drivers license (with a T restriction) will continue to be issued a license with a period of validity that equals the duration of ones lawful status in the United States. They can only renew by visiting an MVA Branch Office.

InstructionsEdit
Renewal Notice: MVA is required by law to send drivers license renewal notices 60 days before ones license expires. Maryland law does, however, require an individual to retest after a license has been expired for 1 year or more. The tests are the same as those for new drivers and geared toward evaluating an applicants ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. It is against the law to drive with an expired license.
For applicants under the age of 40: To improve customer service and reduce wait times, customers under the age of 40, who are eligible, must renew their drivers license online, or by mail or MVA Self-Serve Kiosk. Renewals will no longer be completed at an MVA branch office counter for these customers. You can renew your non-commercial driver's license online at MVAs E-Store.
Renewing your driver's license in person: Visit an MVA branch office to renew your license if one of the following conditions exists:
- Your social security number cannot be verified; OR
- You have suspensions, cancellations or revocations; OR
- You have a tax compliance flag; OR
- You have a suspension in another state; OR
- You are a commercial driver; OR
- You have an alert on your record
New License: MVA will mail your new driver's license using the address they have on record. When you receive your new license, you must destroy your old license. Maryland law allows only one driver's license per driver. You should receive your new license in two weeks or less. Call the MVA at 1-410-768-7000 if you do not receive your new license after 15 days.
Renew a license that has been expired for one (1) year or more: To have your license reissued, you will need to have your vision screened and pass the applicable knowledge test and skills test; a learner's permit is not required. You will be required to present your identity and residency documents as if you are a new applicant.
