ProcedureEdit

  1. Obtain a State of Alabama Voter Registration Form or a National Voter Registration Application. You may download the form online through Alabama Secretary of State's Website.
  2. Complete the form.
  3. Send the form in person or by mail to your County's Voter Registration Office.
  4. Once your application is processed, you will be mailed a voter card which tells you where to vote on election day.


You may go to the following state and local government offices and agencies to inquire on how you may register as a voter:

  • Driver's licensing office
  • County and select municipal public libraries
  • Department of Human Resources
  • WIC Program, Department of Public Health
  • Medicaid Agency
  • Department of Rehabilitation Services


You may also obtain a postcard voter registration form at these locations:

  • Public 4-year universities
  • Select private 4-year universities
  • Driver's licensing office
  • County and select municipal public libraries
  • Department of Human Resources
  • WIC Program, Department of Public Health
  • Medicaid Agency
  • Department of Rehabilitation Services


Notes:

  • You can register to vote any time of the year but remember that voter registration is closed 10 days before election day. If you register to vote during the 10-day cut off period before an election you will not be eligible to vote in that election but you will be eligible to vote in future elections.
  • Alabama is a non-partisan state. You do not have to register by party.
  • You do not have to register every election, as long as you do not move. Your registration qualifies you to vote in all elections held in the precinct where you live.
  • If you moved to another county within Alabama, you must complete a new voter registration application and send it in person or by mail.
  • If have changed your name or your local address since the last election, you must inform the registrar's office in writing or in person. The law requires that any voter whose name or address is not correct on the voter list must provide current information before being allowed to vote. The form to update registration information will be available at all polling places on Election Day.
  • You may not transfer your registration from another state. To be able to vote in Alabama, you must register to vote in Alabama.

EligibilityEdit

To register as a voter in the State of Alabama, an individual must meet the following qualifications:

  • A United States citizen
  • An Alabama resident
  • At least 18 years old
  • Have not been convicted of a disqualifying felony. If you have been convicted of a felony, your civil rights must be restored and you must provide proof of such restoration.
  • Have not been legally declared "mentally incompetent" by a court
