Procedure

Change of Address:

1. You can notify the Driver's License Division about your new address by post. State your complete name, your driver's license number and your new address in your letter and send them to:
   Driver License Division
   P.O. Box 1471
   Montgomery, AL 36102
2. You may also personally apply to change the address stated on your driver's permit by going to your local probate judge or local license commissioner's office.
3. Pay the duplicate fee.

Change of Name:

1. You may also change the name stated on your driver's permit prior to its expiration by personally applying at your local probate judge or license commissioner's office.
2. Present proper documents that supports your change of name (example: marriage certificate or court order)
3. Pay the duplicate fee.

Validity

Your driver's permit is valid for four years after it is issued, you can find the expiration date on the permit.

The permit may be renewed at any time within 60 days prior to expiration at your local Probate Judge or license Commissioner Office.

Alabama law grants a grace period of 60 days after expiration date of a driver's permit for the purpose of driver permit renewal and the driver permit shall be valid for this time period.

Change of address:

After changing your address within Alabama, you have 30 days to notify the Driver's License Division. If you wish to change the address stated on your license, you may apply at your probate judge or local license commissioner's office. A duplicate fee will be charged for a corrected permit.

Change of name:

You may also change the name stated on your driver's permit prior to its expiration by presenting proper documents (example: marriage certificate or court order) to your local probate judge or license commissioner. A duplicate fee will be charged for an updated license.
