- Following are the steps involved in setting up an online ecommerce business.
Apply In-Person:
- If an individual or a partnership firm or a registered company intends to start an online ecommerce business, please follow the below steps.
- Please select a name for your company/trade/business and for your online portal.

- Once the firm is registered, the applicant will get memorandum of association and director identification number. If required, please apply for the trademark registration.
- Please register your website domain. Having a company name and domain name registered, please apply and obtain “GST Identification Number”.
- Please follow our “India - Register for Goods and Service Tax Identification Number (GSTIN)” procedure to get your “Goods and Service Tax Identification Number (GSTIN)”. Link for the procedure: link

- Applicant shall also obtain the shop and establishment license.
- Now it’s time to open a bank account for your business. Please open a bank account.
- Once the above initial set of actions are complete, then it is time for the proprietor to amend Privacy Policy, Website Terms and Conditions and Website Disclaimer for their website.
- The next step is to enroot the online payment to your bank account. To do so, one has to set up the required payment gateway for their online transaction.
- There are many payment gateway service providers to choose from. Please go through their terms and conditions and also pick the one suitable for your business territory.
- Once the above said steps are completed, the business entity will have a business name, a website, “GST” number, “PAN” card, online payment gateway enabled bank account and set of rules and regulations.
- This makes a website to start its business. Thus, an ecommerce online business can be established.
- Note:
- The shop and establishment is mandatory under the respective state act for every person who is starting any commercial activity like a shop or business. Any shop or commercial establishment must apply for Shop and Establishment registration within 30 days of commencing operations. The Application must be submitted to the local municipal corporation of the respective state for getting the license. Even a small trader or a service provider would require this license if he is doing any business or commercial activity. This Act was mainly enacted to regulate the conditions of workers and employees working in a shop or commercial establishments.
- Those who are involved in ecommerce business (online sales of goods), need to follow the rules and regulations set by their respective states.
- Please register your start-up with start-up India link and obtain the appropriate recognition from the “Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT)”to get eligible for the government benefits.
Apply through Centres:
- To apply through centres, the applicant has to approach the respective “CSC” centre in their area. Refer the following link for location: CSC Locator link
- NOTE: The applicant has to select the state, district and block name from the drop-down menu, or the applicant has to click on their respective district to find nearby centres.
- Please visit the centre and consult with the centre operator for your requirement.
- If the operator issues an application form, then collect it and pay the requisite fee. Please complete the application form.
- Now, submit the completed application along with the required documents as per the “Required Documents” section of this page. It is advised to take the documents in original to the kiosk for scanning purposes.
- The operator will process the application online. On successful submission, the applicant will receive an application number as acknowledgement. The applicant will also get a transaction number as a text message on their registered mobile number.
- Applicant has to make necessary payment as centre operator quotes and don’t forget to take the receipt.
- This application will be forwarded to the respective department for further processing.
- ”SMS” triggered update on application status will be sent to the applicant’s mobile. Please keep track of the notification.
- The submitted application will be processed by the department. A designated authority will verify the submitted documents and inspect the area of the applicant to clarify the applicant’s details.
- Based on the outcome of the above-mentioned steps and other internal processing, the designated issuing authority will issue the license.
- The status, viz. Approval or Rejection will be conveyed to the applicant through an “SMS” or applicable norms.
Any other ways of applying: Through Charted Accountant
- Company or firm registration can be initiated with the help of a Charted accountant.
- In registering the company, one has to make sure that the name proposed has not already been used or applied for registration
- Digital signature certificate for the director of the proposed firm has to be acquired
- Then Acquire Director Identification Number (DIN)
- Filing an e-Form or New user registration
- Finally, Incorporation of the company is done.
- Applicant will get MOA and certificate
