- If your RC book was lost / destroyed / completely written off soiled / torn / multilated you can apply for a duplicate registration certificate.
- Download Form 26 and fill all the required information asked in the application form.
- If your vehicle covered by Finance/ Hire Purchase/ Lease you must obtain the signature from the Financier in Form 26.
- Submit the filled in application form and a copy of RC book along with required documents (attach police complaint if your RC book was lost or theft) to the Registering Authority (Regional Transport Officer) in whose jurisdiction the vehicle is registered.

EligibilityEdit
Owner of the Vehicle eligible to apply for Duplicate Registration Certificate.
- If you lost your RC book first you must lodge a complaint in the local police station where you lost your RC book.
- Owner of the vehicle can apply for duplicate Registration Certificate
- An application for the issue of a duplicate Certificate of Registration shall be made in Form 26.
- If vehicle is covered by Finance/ Hire Purchase/ Lease, then the signatures of the Financier must be obtained on Form 26 in duplicate. (To be made in duplicate if the vehicle is held under an agreement of Hire-Purchase/Hypothecation/Lease and in triplicate if the original Registering Authority is different, the duplicate copy and the triplicate copy with the endorsement of the Registering Authority to be returned to the Financier and Registering Authority simultaneously on the issue of Duplicate Certificate)
- Pay the appropriate fee as specified in Rule 81 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989.
- You need to submit the application form in form 26 along with the copy of complaint lodged regarding the loss of RC book and along with required documents to the Registering Authority (Regional Transport Officer (or) Motor Vehicle Inspector, Grade-I / II.) in whose jurisdiction the vehicle is.

ValidityEdit
Incase of non transport vehicles like two wheelers and cars, the registration certificate is valid for 15 years from the date of first registration, and it is renewed after every five subsequent years. Incase of transport vehicles like goods and passenger carriers the registration certificate is valid till certificate of fitness is valid.

Need for the DocumentEdit
In case of loss/destruction of the RC, a person can apply for a duplicate Registration Certificate to the concerned Regional Transport Officer along with a copy of the report lodged with the Police Station in whose jurisdiction such a loss/destruction has occurred.

All letters of the Registration mark/ Number shall be in English and the figures shall be in Arabic numerals and the letters & figures shall be painted in reflecting colours and be shown :
- In case of transport vehicles other than those under the rent a cab scheme 1989 in black on white ground.
- In the case of motor vehicles temporarily registered in red on yellow ground.
- In the case of motor vehicles in the possession of dealer in white on a red ground.
- In other cases, in white on a black ground.
- In the case of transport vehicle under rent a cab scheme,1989, in yellow on a black ground.

- For Motor Cycle or Scooters:
- Height - 35
- Thickness - 7
- Space In MM - 5
- For All Motor Vehicles:

Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit
The registration certificate is used as a proof for the ownership of a vehicle. It can also be used for the transaction,renewal,re-registration of a particular vehicle.
