Apply In-Person
- To apply for trademark registration in Zambia, the applicant will have to contact the Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA), for the main office visit link.
- Make sure that you have all the documents that are listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- An application form will be provided to the applicant upon visiting the Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA) office, find the form here form.
- Once understanding the guideline properly, the applicant has to fill in all the necessary information in the application form.
- In Zambia, there are no specific provisions on the types of designations or identifiers that may serve as trademarks.
- However, a device, brand, heading, label, ticket, name, signature, word, letter, numeral or any combination thereof will suffice as a designation or identifier under the Trademarks Act.
- Submit the application form with necessary attachments to the office.
- Pay the fee as given in the “Fees” section of this page.
- After the completion and verification of all the required documents, the applied trademark is eligible to be registered.
- The trademark will be registered in a stipulated Period of Time.

EligibilityEdit
- An Individual (Person) or a company doing business.
- An individual not doing any business is also eligible to file a trademark application and obtain trademark registration for a word or symbol that is proposed to be used by him/her in the future.
FeesEdit
- Local Companies trademark fee - K 500.10
- Foreign Companies trademark fee: K1500.00.
- Prosecution/examination of trademark: No fee applicable.
- Issuance of registration: ZMW 1,500
ValidityEdit
- Registered trademarks in Zambia have a validity of seven (7) years from the application date.
- They can be renewed indefinitely for further periods of fourteen (14) years.

- The processing time is around 6 to 8 months if there is no opposition to the registration of the trademark.

InstructionsEdit
- If the applicant registers a combined trademark (which includes both word elements and figurative elements) in Zambia, the exclusive right to use the trademark is limited to use of the trademark in the exact configuration or way in which it was filed and registered.
- If the applicant wishes to use the word element of your trademark separately from the logo (or vice versa), it is recommended that the applicant should register for another trademark including only the word or figurative elements wished to be used and protected separately.

Need for the DocumentEdit
- Trademark registration is mandatory to be granted rights over a trademark, as it is a "first to file" jurisdiction.
Information which might helpEdit
- The trademark renewal can be requested as early as six (6) months before the expiration date. It can also be requested during the grace period of one (1) month after the publication of the expiration in the trademarks journal, upon payment of a late renewal fee.
