Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To Apply for a Refugee Visa in person, the applicant must visit the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) office-Contact link
2. The Applicant has to approach the Ghana Immigration Service centre and the applicant can get their application form.
3. Fill out the application form and other relevant documents and they can be found under the "Required Documents" section of this page.
4. Applicants are strongly advised to read the attached privacy policy and to complete and sign the Consent Form. Prior to submitting the applicant application at the Ghana Embassy in applicants home country.
5. If a completed and signed consent form is not included with the application, applicant’s application will be rejected, and will be obligated to be returned to the applicant.
6. A fee for this procedure is free of cost.
7. Submit the completed form in two copies along with the supporting documents to the GIS office.
8. After send the applicant’s application, it will be reviewed at the visa office to make sure it has been completed correctly and that it contains all the required documents.
9. A visa officer will decide if an interview with the applicant is necessary. If an interview is required, the applicant will be notified of the time and place
10. If the applicant’s application is refused, the applicant’s passport and other documents will be returned to the applicant. (Applicant will also receive an explanation why the applicant’s application was refused and if the applicant sent fraudulent documents, they will not be returned).
11. If the applicant’s application is approved, his/her passport and documents will be returned to the applicant with him/her visa.
12. Visas are processed within 30 working days of submission of applications.

• Valid Identification documents from your home country e.g. ID card, driver licence
• Education certificate
• Letter of support
• Valid passport
• Marriage certificate
• Birth certificate

Eligibility

• People resettled in Ghana as refugees or who have been granted asylum can apply for their spouse or minors and it should be within two (2) years.
• Those adjusted to permanent resident after previously having had the status of refugee or asylum.

Fees

• A fee for this procedure is free of cost.

Validity

• Valid for this visa is 1 year.

• Applicant must complete application form before submitting; incomplete applications will be rejected by authorities.

Need for the Document

• The Refugee Visa is issued to persons fleeing the dangers of persecution, a war or a natural disaster and enables him/her to be able to reside and move freely within the country that is hosting him/her.

Information which might help

Please note:

• Report directly to the Settlement Commandant for registration or Head to Crime Intelligence office at Old Kampala Police Station for registration.
• Applicant will be given a card and a date for further registration.
• On the scheduled date, report to the Office of the Prime Minister with your dependents.

Other uses of the Document/Certificate
