ProcedureEdit

Apply through Post

  1. To Apply (Register) for a Geographical Indications Certificate, the applicant has to approach the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade link link
  2. An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer. Or it can be downloaded from the following link (GI-1 form) link
  3. The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
  4. Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  5. The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
  6. The application shall be signed by the applicant or his agent and must be accompanied by a statement of case.
  7. Submit all the documents with the completed form to the concerned office through post, the postal address is mentioned in the “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page.
  8. The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority through cash or sent by money order or by a bank draft or by a cheque.
  9. After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
  10. All applications are processed within a reasonable time, having regard to the particular circumstances of each application, including the completeness of information and documents submitted to the authority by the applicant.
  11. The GI Registry will examine the application to ensure it meets the necessary criteria. This may involve conducting inquiries, verifying facts, and seeking clarifications.
  12. If the application passes the examination, it will be published in the Geographical Indications Journal. There is a period during which third parties can oppose the registration if they believe they would be adversely affected by it.
  13. If there are no oppositions or if the oppositions are resolved in the applicant's favor, he/she product will be granted the GI tag. The applicant will receive a Geographical Indication certificate.
  14. The applicant has to visit the office to complete the certificate process while collecting the certificate.
  15. This entire process can be completed within 3 to 4 months or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.

EligibilityEdit

  • The applicant product must have a unique quality, reputation, or characteristic attributable to its geographical origin. It must also belong to a specific region, locality, or territory.
