Apply In Person

  1. To Obtain Professional Title (Captain, Captain of Height, First Naval Engineer and Chief Engineer), the applicant has to approach the Ministry of Communications and Transportation link Secretaría de Marina link
  2. Ensure that you have completed the necessary education and training programs required for the specific professional title you are seeking.
  3. The educational requirements vary depending on the profession and are typically provided by accredited institutions in Mexico.
  4. Gain the required practical experience or sea service hours, as mandated by the regulatory bodies or institutions responsible for granting the professional titles. This may involve working on vessels, completing internships, or fulfilling specific job roles related to the profession.

  9. The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
  10. Submit all the documents with the completed form to the concerned officer.
  11. The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority.
  12. After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
  13. Then the application will be processed further.
  14. Depending on the profession and the requirements of the regulatory body, you may need to attend interviews or oral examinations to further assess your qualifications and suitability for the professional title.
  15. This entire process can be completed within 15 – 20 days or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.

The requirements to obtain a professional title in Mexico for the following maritime professions are:

Captain:

  • Be of Mexican nationality.
  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Complete a nautical training course at a maritime academy or other recognized institution.
  • Pass a physical examination and a maritime aptitude test.
  • Have at least 1,200 hours of sea time as a deck officer.


Captain of Height:

  • Be of Mexican nationality.
  • Be at least 25 years old.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Complete a nautical training course at a maritime academy or other recognized institution.
  • Pass a physical examination and a maritime aptitude test.
  • Have at least 1,800 hours of sea time as a deck officer, including at least 600 hours as a watchkeeping officer.


First Naval Engineer:

  • Be of Mexican nationality.
  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Complete a nautical training course at a maritime academy or other recognized institution.
  • Pass a physical examination and a maritime aptitude test.
  • Have at least 1,200 hours of sea time as a marine engineer.


Chief Engineer:

  • Be of Mexican nationality.
  • Be at least 25 years old.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Complete a nautical training course at a maritime academy or other recognized institution.
  • Pass a physical examination and a maritime aptitude test.
  • Have at least 1,800 hours of sea time as a marine engineer, including at least 600 hours as a watchkeeping engineer.
