Procedure

1. Provide the following documents at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Unit in Floriana or at the Gozo licensing office: Application for the Exchange of a European Driving License if the license is issued in EU, EAA or Switzerland, Application for the Exchange of an Australian Driving License DRV14 together with the following forms if the applicant holds an Australian license, One colored passport-sized photograph, A copy of your Identity card and A copy of your foreign license
2. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Unit communicates, by fax or e-mail, with the E.U. Member State or Swiss authorities where the driving license was issued to get a confirmation verifying whether the applicant holds a valid driving license and whether any restrictions prevail.
3. On receiving approval from the Member State, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Unit sends you a letter to inform you that the exchange of license can be exchanged with a Maltese driving license. #You will then need the following: present your original EU/Swiss/Australian Driving license; verification of the validity of the driving license signed by the Australian Authorities (for Australian driving licenses); and fee for Maltese license is 52.50 (for 10 years)
4. The new license together with the license counterpart will be posted after some days.

Notes:

• If you are approaching your 70th birthday you will be charged for the number of years up till such birthday. The license of persons aged over 70 years will be renewed for 5 years for 29.25 and every 5 years thereafter and is subject to a medical certificate of fitness to drive signed by a medical general practitioner.
• In possible cases of disapproval in respect to the validity of a Driving License from the member state or third country concerned, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Unit sends you a letter to inform you that the exchange of license has been disapproved and cannot be exchanged for a Maltese driving license.
• You will be asked to sign a declaration in case your license has been lost or stolen. In such cases a declaration fee of 8.00 is applied.

Eligibility

Any holder of a European Union driving license, a Swiss or an Australian driving license issued by a Swiss or an Australian State and Territory licensing authorities, who takes up normal residence in Malta, shall be entitled to have his driving license exchanged for an equivalent Maltese license. You must have been living in Malta for at least 185 days in the last year, otherwise the exchange of license cannot be effected.
