Procedure

Applying for the Government's Student Loan Scheme

Request a DigiD with SMS verification. With a DigiD you can access online services offered by the Dutch government. You will receive an activation code within 5 days after your request.

Apply for a personal OV-chipkaart. When you are entitled to student finance, you are allowed to use public transport for free. The student travel product can only be loaded on a personal OV-chipcard.

Log in to Mijn DUO to apply for student finance. You can only log in with your DigiD code. If you cannot use DigiD, you can apply for student finance using the application form below.

Apply for a student grant for higher education (207Kb, pdf)

You can apply and take effect no later than the 1st day of the month in which you are 30 student. Your student is after your 30th continues. Stop after your 30th your student, you can no longer start up again.

• Log in to Mijn DUO to apply for a loan.
• Go to the 'Mijn gegevens' screen and choose 'Persoon.
• On the 'Persoon screen go to Studiefinanciering, behind Aangevraagd.
• On the Details studiefinanciering' screen go to Wijzig, behind 'Studiefinanciering aangevraagd'. The rest is a matter of course.

Applying for a Student Loan Banks

• The student complete Education Loan Application Forms
• The bank follow?up with the student & parents to answer questions
• A bank Representative visits your house & collects signed application form with the supporting documents
• The Student provide a completed Education Loan Application form with all the required supporting documents
• Note: Students can apply for Education Loan even before confirmed admission
• Credit team to review & underwrite the Education Loan application
• The bank approves the education loan or may ask for any additional information required
• The student complete the education loan disbursement formalities by signing the education loan agreement
• The education loan amount is deposited in the required bank account electronically

Eligibility

If you are under the age of 30 and are registered in full-time or dual education, you can apply for student finance. You must be a Dutch national or have the same rights, depending on your residence permit or your nationality.

You can authorize someone to look after your student affairs.

This person may, on your behalf, make requests and modifications to pass DUO. The authorization is valid for all DUO schemes operated with which you are dealing.

Validity

For a 4-year degree programme (HBO or university) you are entitled to 7 years of student finance. A supplementary grant is only possible the first 4 years. The student travel product you can get for 5 years. Some degree programmes take longer than 4 years. Then you are longer entitled to student finance. You have to use up your student finance within 10 years.

The Ministry shall inform the student in writing of the financial support. The Ministry lays down in writing the financial support provided to the student in his administration, citing the citizen service number of the student and the amount of the allocated amount.

The administrative grant from the ministry and that of an institution are separate facilities. The possibility exists that a student receives financial support from both the Ministry of Education as the institution. An administrative grant or the total of both exchanges can affect the level of student of the student.

Need for the Document

A student can contribute to his/her income by taking a part-time job. In addition he/she can borrow money from the Education Executive Agency (DUO), if he/she is eligible for student finance. The student decides how much loan he wants to take out. Use a calculator (in Dutch only) to see how much you must repay afterwards.

Information which might help

The Education Executive Agency (DUO) performs as a benefit and expenses on behalf of the Minister of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) education laws and regulations from. Commissioned by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment supports DUO municipalities in the implementation of the Integration Act. The main tasks of DUO are:

• funding of educational institutions;
• providing grants and contribution to school fees;
• collecting tuition fees and student loans;
• recognition of diplomas, manage Diploma Bank;
• organizing school and state and civic exams;
• providing process of notification, selection and placement of higher education;
• collect and manage data in a variety of educational records;
• enriching educational data into information products;
• act as National Europass Centre Netherlands.

Other uses of the Document/Certificate

A student loan is designed to help students pay for university tuition, books, and living expenses. It may differ from other types of loans in that the interest rate may be substantially lower and the repayment schedule may be deferred while the student is still in school.

Student grants for college and university consists of 4 components: loan, student travel product, supplementary grant and tuition credit. Loan, travel product and tuition credit are there for everyone. The supplementary grant depends on your parents' income.

At service office staff can assist you with DUO problems. In addition you must be able to identify. So take a valid ID. An identification card is a passport, identity card, driving license or residence permit.
