Kiribati - Replace Lost / Stolen / Damaged Passport

ProcedureEdit

If you have been previously issued a passport and unfortunately you have lost it or it was stolen. By law, you must report the incident to the Police and Immigration office as soon as possible. This will prevent criminal misuse of the document and also protect your identity.

Your passport will be immediately and permanently cancelled. It cannot be reinstated and must not be used for travel should you find it later. You will need to request for a replacement passport.

To obtain a replacement passport, please follow the steps below:

  1. If your passport was lost or stolen. Before you can apply for a replacement passport, you will need to file a Police report first.
    1. If your passport was lost in Kiribati, you can report the loss or theft by going to the Police Station where you suspect your passport was lost or stolen.
    2. If overseas, you should also report the incident to the police and ensure that you obtain a copy of the police report and send it over to the Immigration Office Headquarter.
  2. After receiving the police report, you may now proceed with your application for a replacement passport.
  3. A downloadable copy of the Passport Application form is available on Ministry of Foreign Affairs' website. A link can be found under 'Documents to Use' section. Download and complete the application form. You may also obtain a copy of the for at the Immigration Office
  4. Bring the completed form, current photo with signature to the Immigration Division office in Bairiki Tarawa.
    Kiribati citizens living in the Line Islands will need to apply for their passports at the Immigration branch office, London Kiritimati in person.
    Kiribati citizens living abroad may download the application form online. Complete the form and send it over with all the required documents to your relatives in Tarawa through email or express mail and Immigration will process your application through your relatives, especially with payment and document verification.
    The Kiribati High Commission in Suva also accepts application forms and process payments as well for I-Kiribati living in Fiji or nearby countries.
  5. Submit all the the required documents.
  6. Pay the passport fee:

EligibilityEdit

You are entitled to a Kiribati passport if you are:

  • Born in Kiribati, and at least one of parents was a citizen of Kiribati at the time.
  • Born outside Kiribati, and your father was a citizen of Kiribati at the time.
  • Born in Kiribati and, although neither parent was a citizen of Kiribati, you did not become a citizen of any other country at birth.
  • Registered as a citizen by the Citizenship Commission
  • Naturalized as a citizen
