Step 1: Register with EPRA portal - Pay application fees and apply for electrical contractor licence.
Apply Online:
- Open ERC Website: Energy and Petroleum Authtority
- Click on the tab “online services” and select the license Application Option link. This will direct you to the next page where you are to register/log into the EPRA portal
- For new users click on the “register” tab. For existing users login using your user name and password
- Click “apply for a new licence”
- For contractors select “business/company”
- Enter your personal details and press save. Ensure that you enter your correct email address. Create a unique username and password.
- Open your email, you will find a message from EPRA. Open our portal through the link given in your inbox and fill in the rest of the details.

- Enter the details of your referees and press enter.
- Upload your scanned documents in their respective places and press next. These documents include
- i. Legible Copies of Identification Documents i.e. IDs/Passports for all the Company directors
- ii. Copies of Original Certificate
- iii. Certified copy of PIN registration certificate
- iv. Copy of Electrician License
- v. Business Registration Certificate
- vi. Single-business permit from the municipality
- vii. Lease Agreement/Ownership
- viii. List of Tools
- ix. Professional Registration Certificate if any
- x. Valid Tax Compliance Certificate from Kenya Revenue Authority
- xi. Signed Electrician Consent Letter
- i. Legible Copies of Identification Documents i.e. IDs/Passports for all the Company directors
- Enter the transaction number indicated in the payment slip. The payment date is the date you deposited money to the bank.
- Select date of premise inspection.
- Submit your application and print the application notification.
Step 2: Premise inspection & notification of oral interview
- An EPRA officer will then visit your business premises to do an inspection. He will inspect the building, electrical tools and equipment.
- After inspection the officer will make recommendations and will give you a notification of an oral interview. You will be given a date to take an oral interview in ERC offices.
Step 3: Oral interview & obtaining payment notifications
- Visit the EPRA office on the scheduled interview date to do your oral interview.
- After a successful interview you will then be given payment details for your electrical contractor license.
Step 4: Pay licence grant fees
You are to pay the fees to be granted the contractor license. Payments are to be made to

The fees for the license are
- Class C-2..........Ksh 1,000
- Class C-1..........Ksh 2,000

Step 5: Obtain electrical contractor licence
- Present the payment receipt to the EPRA offices to be issued with the contractor license. You will need proof of identification to collect the licence.
- This process usually takes a period of 30 days to complete.

- No person shall carry out any electrical installation work unless he is registered by the Board as an electrical contractor.

- An electrical contractor is a business person or firm that performs specialized construction work related to the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical system in the country.
- An electrical contractor is different from an electrician; an electrician is an individual tradesman and an electrical contractor is a business person or company that employs electricians. Both usually hold licenses and insurances to properly and safely operate a business.
- i. An Electrical Contractor can be contractors who are responsible for high-voltage power transmission and distribution lines.
- ii. Electrical contractors provide electricity to any structure within a property’s boundary lines, including outdoor lighting or substations.
- iii. Electrical contractors can serve as prime contractors for all electrical and cabling design, installation, and maintenance for commercial, institutional, and residential buildings.
- i. An Electrical Contractor can be contractors who are responsible for high-voltage power transmission and distribution lines.
- Before you try to register as a contractor with Energy regulatory Commission in Kenya, be sure to review the information requirement to ensure you have met all the other business requirements for a contractor.

- Registration as an electrical contractor is not required in the following circumstances
- i. A company employs licensed personnel on a continuous basis to carry out electrical installation work only on the premises owned or occupied by the company (single site, employees are electrical workers)
- ii. A person is engaged in a contract and the part of the contract relating to electrical installation work is sub-contracted to a registered electrical contractor (sub- contracting arrangements)
- iii. A person who holds an electrician's licence and undertakes to carry out electrical installation work from time to time for no financial return and on a gratuitous basis (no profit or reward)
- iv. A person who holds the appropriate Disconnect/Reconnect Licence, and contracts or undertakes to carry out electrical work permitted under that licence (where electrical work is not the main occupation of the business)
- v. A person who holds an Occupier's Licence and undertakes to carry out electrical installation work permitted under that licence.
