Kenya - Obtain Private Medical Institution Licence

Apply In Person

  1. To apply for a Private Medical Institution License, the applicant should make the application to the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC). Please view the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council contact details through this KMPDC Contact Details.
  2. The applicant should obtain the application form for registration of a Private Medical or Dental Institution from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council office or download the form directly through this APPLICATION FOR REGISTRATION OF A HEALTH INSTITUTION. The application form can also be downloaded from the KMPDC’s official website through this KMPDC Downloads
  3. Fill in the application form correctly and attach all the required supporting documents as mentioned in the “Required Documents” section below.
  4. Then the applicant should pay the license application fee as mentioned in the “Fees” section below and obtain the payment receipt.
  5. Then submit the completed application form, all the required documents, and the payment receipt to the KMPDC Office for processing of the registration application.
  6. The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council will go through the application forms, professional documents, and certificates to determine their authenticity and if they meet the set requirements.
  7. Once the application is verified, inspection officers from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council will visit the proposed health institution premises to carry out an inspection to determine if the health institution meets the required standard for registration. Note: The facility should be inspected by the County Director of Health or County Health Management Team or Joint Board and Council Inspection Team.
  8. The inspection team will then write an inspection report and submit the report to the council for evaluation and decision-making.
  9. The council will deliberate on the inspection findings and where the applicant satisfies the Council that the institution meets the requirements for registration, the Council shall register the facility as an approved health institution.
  10. Then the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council will enter the data of the newly registered health facility in their system and generate the registration number of the facility.
  11. Then the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council will contact the applicant to collect the Health Institutions Registration Certificate in person within a minimum of two weeks.
  12. The applicant will be required to produce proof of identity when collecting the Health Institutions Registration Certificate.

InstructionsEdit

The person or organisation should have:

  • Company or Business Registration Certificate
  • Certified copies of Professional Certificates of all Health Professionals working therein including licenses from their respective Regulatory Authorities.
  • Approves Building Architectural Plans for hospitals and nursing homes.
  • The Hospitals, Maternity & Nursing Homes must have a holding room for dead bodies or mortuary
  • All in-patient facilities must have a clearly defined method of waste disposal and management systems in place including incinerators, placenta pits, etc.
  • The facility should be inspected by the County Director of Health or County Health Management Team or Joint Board and Council Inspection Team.
  • It may be a requirement from other Health Regulatory Authorities to obtain their licenses for other facilities: e.g. Laboratory, Pharmacy, Radiology, X-ray Services, etc.
  • The Proprietor/Administrator/Director must ensure that: -
    • All payments are paid in full as per the category.
    • Licenses are up to date.
    • Health Professionals working therein are registered and licensed by their respective Boards/Councils.
