- The first step is to come together as dairy farmer groups or individual farmers so as to engage in the collection, bulking and marketing of raw milk to have advantages of economies of scale.
- You should then identify a suitable premise to for collection, bulking and storage of the raw milk and qualified personnel to run the facility. Make sure the premises has complied with the laid out hygienic and operational requirements. (These have been mentioned in the eligibility section.)
- Contact the nearest Kenya Dairy Board office to obtain a notice of a preliminary inspection of premises. A list of KDB Office branches can be downloaded through this link.
- This will be followed by an inspection of the premises by the Kenya Dairy Board to determine whether the premises has complied with the laid out hygienic and operational requirements
- If everything is in order, you can move on to the next step and make your application for license online. Where areas of non-compliances are identified, improvements should be undertaken.

- Visit the Kenya Dairy Board Licensing Portal to make your application for the Milk Primary Producer license and pay the requisite application fees

- After registration, log in to your Kenya dairy board online account and make an application for inspection of the primary production premises and make a payment for the application. The application fees is Ksh. 600
- This will be followed by an inspection of the premises to ensure that it complies with the laid out hygienic and operational requirements of the Kenya Dairy Board and if successful, you are required to pay the requisite license fees. This you can do by logging into your Kenya Dairy Board Licensing Portal dashboard. The license fees is Ksh 1,200.
- Once payment is made the milk primary producer license will be processed within fourteen days and it can be downloaded from your online dashboard.
- The license has a validity period of one year and you can start operations immediately.
- Pay monthly cess and levy as and where applicable. Other conditions of issuance of the license should be observed (Non-compliance can lead to suspension of permit)

- A milk primary producer license is issued to dairy farmer groups and individual farmers engaged in collection, bulking and marketing of raw milk
- The milk handling premises should comply with the laid out hygienic and operational requirements. This include compliance in the following areas among others;
- Premises: should be properly located, designed, ventilated, lighted and protected from contamination
- Equipment – Equipment, piping, accessories and other contact surfaces coming into contact with milk and milk products should be easy to clean and sanitize, corrosion resistant and made from food grade material
- Personnel: Milk handling personnel should be clean and well-groomed, properly attired and medically certified
- Record keeping: Quality records should be maintain and updated
- Waste management: Effluent and other solid wastes should be managed in accordance with regulations
- Utilities: Adequate supply of potable water and other essential utilities depending on type of operation
- Management: Premises should be managed by a qualified supervisor or manager
- Operations: Recommended processing schedules should be followed e.g. pasteurization temperatures and time controls
- Rodent and vermin control: Premises should be protected against invasion by flies, rodents, birds and other vermin
- Premises: should be properly located, designed, ventilated, lighted and protected from contamination
