A national identity card is a national document that may be presented by a citizen to identify himself. Senegalese citizens who are at least 5 years old may apply to obtain a national identity card. Possessing a national identity card is mandatory for those aged 15 and up.<br />

A citizen must be able to present his/her national identity card during checks by the security forces. If, during an identity check, a person over 15 years can not submit his/her national identity card, the citizen may be taken to the police station for inspection. If a person older than 15 years do not have a national identity card or in possession of an expired national identity card, the citizen may be asked to pay a fine of FCFA 6,000, or 12,000 FCFA in case of the incident will happen again.<br />
