ProcedureEdit
Importing your pets:
- Have your pet examined by a veterinarian: You will need to have your pet examined by a certified veterinarian. Some of the documents that you will need to present when your pet arrives in Netherlands will be issued by your vet. In addition to a health certificate, your animal must:
- Be vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days prior to the departure date. Pets imported from an unlisted country such as the US require a blood test to confirm the vaccination.
- Be implanted with an electronic microchip. A number is issued and all details stored in a European database so that it is easier for authorities to identify pets and their owners.
- Pet Passport: It is recommended that you allow at least a 6-9 month waiting period to arrange for your pet paperwork. If you will be travelling together with your pet you must be able to present a pet passport (EU-dierenpaspoort). This document can be obtained from your vet and contains the following information:
- Statement from your vet that your pet has been vaccinated against rabies.
- Description of pet including its breed, sex, age, colour, type of fur and marks.
- Tattoo or microchip number.
- Name of owner.
- If you are outside the Netherlands: You may use the link provided under "Office Locations & Contacts" to get in touch with the nearest Dutch embassy in the country you are currently staying. The office will be able to provide you with information about pet passports or entry permits for pets.
- When making arrangements to transport your pet: Make sure that you have all the required documents, and got in touch with the authority responsible with the import/export of live animals in the country where your pet will be coming from and in Netherlands. If you are thinking of flying in with your pet, you may also try and contact the airline company, its often overlooked that you have to make a reservation for your pet to travel with you. Airlines have strict weight limitations and temperature restrictions that may endanger or cause discomfort to your animal therefore its suggested to check in advance. Individual airlines will advise on which animals can be taken on board and which must go on as designated cargo.
