Step 1: Have your pet examined by a veterinarian and get all the relevant vaccines

You will need to have your pet examined by a certified veterinarian. Some of the documents that you will need to present when your pet arrives in Kenya will be issued by your vet. Your vet will also be the one who will issue the pet passport.
Similarity if you are in Kenya and are willing to export your pet. Make sure your pet has been vaccinated. You can do this by visiting the Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute; here you will be issued with a pet passport

Step 2: Prepare all the relevant documents

To import a dog or cat into Kenya one should present the following to the Kenyan Embassy abroad;

A formal letter from the pet owner requesting for a permit
A certified copy of Passport of the owner of the dog or cat
Current Health Certificate from a Veterinary doctor
A vaccination card for the pet (against rabies) signed by a Veterinary doctor
Processing fee payable at the Kenyan Embassy

To export a dog or cat into Kenya one should present the following;

Export Permit, obtained from Veterinary Department, Kabete, and Nairobi prior to departure.
A certified copy of the pet owners passport
Certificate of Vaccination, including rabies, signed by a Veterinary doctor
Current Health Certificate from a Veterinary doctor

Step 3: Contact Airline

If you are thinking of flying in with your pet, you may also try and contact the airline company, they may be able to provide additional information about pet passports and how you can bring your pet abroad.

Step 4: Apply for an import / export permit.

Under Kenyas 'Animal Disease & Rabies Act (CAPS 364 & 365) you will need to apply for an import permit if you would like to bring in pet into the country. This is an International Health Certificate (vet.) and Movement Permit for only Dogs and Cats. You can apply for one from Kenya missions abroad.
If you are exporting your pet from Kenya make sure you get an exporting permit. You can do this by visiting the embassy of the country involved.

Step 5: Arrival in Kenya

After arriving in Kenya you have to report the arrival within three days of arrival. The arrival of any animal entering Kenya other than by sea at Mombasa or by air at Nairobi must be reported to the nearest veterinary office within three days of arrival.
If travelling from Kenya, the protocol about arrival in the other country will be explained by the embassy of the country involved.

EligibilityEdit

No canine or feline animal shall be imported into Kenya from any country unless:

The animal is accompanied by the certificate of a veterinary surgeon, signed not more than five days prior to the date of departure from the country of origin, certifying that the animal is free from clinical symptoms of any contagious or infectious disease.
The animal is accompanied by a valid Rabies vaccination certificate stating-

(i). the type, manufacturer and Batch No. of the vaccine; the apparent age of the animal at the time of vaccination; the date of vaccination

(ii). Animals vaccinated against Rabies less than six months prior to arrival in Kenya must also be accompanied by a certificate signed by a Government Veterinary Officer of the country of origin stating that there has been no case of Rabies within 30 miles of the place of origin of the animal within the preceding six months.
The animal is accompanied by a certificate from the Captain of the ship or aircraft in which the animal travelled to Kenya certifying that the animal has not left the craft between the place of embarkation and the place of entry into Kenya, and has been isolated from all other canine and feline animals throughout the journey.

A fee is charged in cash or postal order payable to Kenya High Commission. This fee may vary depending on the country of origin.

ValidityEdit

Validity of Rabies Vaccines - A certificate of Rabies vaccination is valid for all canines which are over the age of six months at vaccination and for all felines which are over the age of four months at vaccination, for the period specified, providing that one of the following approved vaccines has been used:

(a) Phenolized (inactivated) vaccine:

Canines and felines: One month to 12 months, post vaccination.

(b) Living Avianized vaccine (Flury or Kelev strain)

Canines: One month to 36 months, post vaccination.
Felines: One month to 12 months, post vaccination

This allows owners of pet dogs and cats to import and export their pets in and out of Kenya.

Information which might helpEdit

Dogs & cats are allowed with approved import permit; they are dutiable but exempt from VAT.
Pet birds are prohibited.
Other animals (apart from dogs and cats) are classified as "Domestic" or "Wildlife". Care should therefore be made when importing animals especially wildlife into Kenya which are governed under other Laws and Regulations.
Any animal arriving into Kenya without the certificates stated above will be kept in quarantine, at the expenses of the owner, for up to six months.
The arrival of any animal entering Kenya other than by sea at Mombasa or by air at Nairobi must be reported to the nearest veterinary office within three days of arrival.

NOTE

Any animal arriving into Kenya without the certificates stated above will be kept in quarantine, at the expenses of the owner, for up to six months with the exception that:-

(a) dogs and cats, imported directly from Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden or the United Kingdom, need not have certificates of rabies.

(b) Animals in transit for less than 48 hours need not have certificates of rabies, but will be kept in isolation, at the owners’ expense, during this period. Such animals will only be allowed to leave Kenya by air or sea.
