Ireland - Obtain Letter of No Impediment / Single Status Certificate / Certificate of Freedom to Marry

Apply In Person (both Citizen & Non – Citizen)
- To apply for Single Status Certificate / Unmarried Certificate, the applicant has to approach the Ministry of Foreign Affairs–link
- To download the complete form, the applicant has to use the following link – link
- The applicant has to complete the entire initial question and click the “Next” button.
- The applicant has to enter the details in the application form and click the “Next” button.
- The applicant has to pay the fee in online mode.
- The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee of €66.
- Now the applicant has to check the required documents details and click the “Print” button to download the complete form.
- The applicant has to Submit all the documents with the completed form to the concerned nearest Irish Embassy or Consulate if the person lives in aboard or submit it through the cork office or Dublin office.
- After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. #If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
- An acknowledgment receipt will be provided. Please save it for future reference.
- Then the application will be processed further. All the updates on the application status will be sent via SMS to the applicant’s mobile number.
- Once the process gets completed, the applicant gets a certificate from the office.
- This entire process can be completed within 8 weeks or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.

Your checklist will tell you exactly what supporting documentation you'll need for your application, which may include:
- Your original long-form birth certificate
- A court order, if you are under 18 years
- Death certificate of your previous spouse, if widowed
- Petition and final decree of your divorce, if divorced
- A photocopy of your current Irish passport
- Your original naturalization certification, if naturalized
You'll need to submit certified translations of any of these documents, if the originals are in a language other than English or Irish.

In order for non-nationals to marry in a foreign country you will most likely be required to produce legal documentation from your country of citizenship verifying single status and that you are free to marry. This is known as a 'Certificate of No Impediment', 'Certificate de Coutume', 'Certificate of Nulla Osta' or a 'Certificate of Freedom to Marry'.

It is advisable to follow the guidelines that certain authorities deem necessary. Those wishing to marry overseas will need special documentation. First, couples will have to present a declaration that is processed by your local office where marriage documents are produced. This must be from the state where you live in the Ireland. On this statement will be recorded the fact that there has not be any marriage in recent years.
Due to the fact that these types of documents are sought for foreign involvement one will need the local or state registrars account or declaration to be authenticated to work abroad.
- Go to the Civil Registry office where marriages are registered.
- Present and submit required documents.
- Complete a form and declare.
- Pay the fee.

Online questionnaire
To apply for a Certificate of Freedom to Marry, you must complete an online questionnaire about yourself and your upcoming marriage or civil partnership.
Statutory Declaration
Based on this questionnaire, youll be presented with one or more Statutory Declarations to complete and a checklist of supporting documentation you'll need to submit with your application.
You need to:
- Print and sign your questionnaire
- Print out a copy of each Statutory Declaration
- Print out your checklist
- Complete the Declarations and have them witnessed
- Post them to us with your supporting documentation, signed questionnaire and fee
Remember...
Print off or save each form right after your online questionnaire, as you won't be able to retrieve them later.
When to apply
Submit your application a minimum of four months before the date of your marriage or civil partnership.
Your witnessed statutory declaration(s) cannot be dated more than six months before the date we receive your application.
Remember...
Your application is not complete until we get hard copies of your questionnaire, statutory declaration(s), and all supporting documentation.
Witnesses
Your statutory declaration must be witnessed before you can submit it. Who can be a witness?
Your witness must:
- Know you personally
- Know a third party personally who can identify you
- Be able to verify your identity through your official documents (eg a passport)

Your witness can be:
- A notary public
- A Commissioner for Oaths
- A solicitor
Applying abroad
Your witness can be:
- A diplomatic or consular officer of Ireland
- A notary public
- A Commissioner for Oaths or someone authorised to administer oaths or declarations
Your witness needs to:
- Witness you completing and signing your Statutory Declaration(s)
- Complete and sign the relevant part of your Statutory Declaration(s)
Remember...
Its against the law to make a Statutory Declaration that you know is false or misleading in any way.
